This watch is for sale on another forum I frequent and I am having trouble deciding what the value is. It is apparently a ref.2636-4 with a cal 344 which seems to check out. However, I am having trouble figuring out just what exactly a ref.2636 is. I found one ebay listing claiming this is a model of Seamaster (http://www.ebay.com/itm/301417351915?rmvSB=truePurchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network) but I'm not sure that's the case.

Secondarily, in the opinion of this forum does the patina on the dial add to or detract from the value here? I know tropical dials can be very valuable for some Omegas but perhaps not all? This watch seems to be not a very popular/collectible model so I am curious what sort of price would be appropriate for it.

This is my first post on this forum but it seems like a great place to learn so I plan to hang around. Thanks in advance!

Keep the offer on the low side if you want to buy it...should be enough cal 344 1950's bumpers on eBay for you to get a ball park figure.

Thanks for the tip! Prices seem to be a little all over the map on eBay. I don't know if I'll make an offer or not. I feel like I would need to see the watch in person to determine how the patina looks and the seller is in Europe.

Yeah that's where I'm leaning. Don't really want to insult the seller with an offer that low. I'll let someone else fall on that sword.

Insult the seller. The seller obviously has no problem with attempted robbery.

I made an offer on another watch from this seller which he accepted but I am waiting on more photos before paying. Now that I have more information, I am thinking I would probably be overpaying for it as well. I think perhaps I need to do a lot more research before I start buying any vintage watches.

Just for grins, it's a 1953 Tissot, 14k solid gold...supposedly. Would it be normal to have a steel/gold plated case back on a solid gold watch? Also would it be normal to have a 14k gold watch from 1953? I read somewhere that only 18k and up is "legit" in Europe but not sure if that is true.

Asking price was $650, I offered $75 less than that. Sure am glad I joined this forum before paying!

1200 for the first one is waaaaay too much. You can get a collector grade pristine one for that. I do like the Tissot watch, lovely dial and nice looking movement. Can't tell you much about the gold part..If it is advertised as 14k solid gold then it should be throughout. Perhaps this is a Tissot feature, perhaps it was swapped out. If the upper case is gold I reckon you slightly overpaid for this one , but not overly. Remember though that Tissot were made by the bucketload and unless there is something really special or collectable about it , maybe not the best brand if you're looking to invest. That said, Tissots from this are era lovely quality watches.

Thank you! The Tissot wouldn't be an investment, would be a DD to go in the rotation with a Seiko.
