    Hi guys,

I sold a 3590.50 recently which bears the serial number 482829XX. I always ilovemyspeedmaster for an accurate production date of the watch. The watch came up as 1992 so I sold it as a 1992 watch. I consulted a couple of other friends.

The buyer has come back to me 3 months later and asked for a refund, as he alleges that I misdescribed the watch to him. He is saying the watch is in fact a 1985 which he says correlates with Chuck Maddox's chart.

The watch sits on a 1479 bracelet with 812 end links.

Any advice would be appreciated

Sounds like buyers remorse. Chucks charts are way off but dating a Speedy post 1980 is tricky. An extract is the definitive answer but there is a real chance it could come back a year or two out for a watch from this era. Unfortunately you were unwise to be so sure over the date on that one. Eugene’s dating tool depends on data from contributors, there are way fewer data points on post -78 pieces, so there is more uncertainty. Also there is a strong suspicion Speedy movements weren’t always used sequentially at various times. In Seamasters for instance, movements were being used in the early 90s with dates that look awfully like those from mid 80s, perhaps Omega had a stockpile. That’s more normal in PreBonds and early SMPs though.

How has he dated it at 1985? Extract or guesswork form an outdated web source? Did it have papers, if so that is also a legitimate date.

Yes, the Chuck Maddox charts are way outdated and often wrong. Also, the 1479/812 bracelet appears most commonly on ~'89-95 models.... Sounds to me like your buyer is just trying to unload the watch

I have a 3590.50 with serial 482774XX and I also have an extract showing July 1991 (it's also posted on this forum and you can show it to him). I don't see how your serial number that comes after mine could be from the 80s. Tell him to do some research

I have an extract for 482592XX that dates it to May 31, 1990. I can send you a copy to show the buyer that it sure as hell isn't 1985.

I bought a full set mint 3590 last year,

Serial 482802XX, papers dated to '94, ilovemyspeedmaster gives a production date of '91.

I highly doubt that your watch would be from the mid 80‘s.

If you need pictures let me know.

Sounds like sellers remorse to me.

    Cheers,

    Max

Agree with above, an extract from the archives is the trustiest way to tell when the watch was produced. I’ve had a 3590.50 from 1989 with serial 482539xx.

However, my CYA these days is to say the “estimated” production is 19xx. That is if I do not have paperwork. Good luck!

When you say "papers dated to '94", do you mean the extract or the purchase paperwork?

That’s not too unreasonable that it sat on the shelf for a few years before being sold.

The purchased paperwork. I didn’t order an extract for this one yet.

    Cheers,
