Hi everyone! First time poster, but long time lurker. I have spent too many hours on this forum reading about watches. Thanks for a great forum! For the last months I have been searching for an old speedmaster with an applied logo. It has been hard finding one within EU at a good price. However a local auction house has received one. So I would like your help to determine it's value and if something is wrong with it. I know that the bracelet is not the correct one. The information they provide is: OMEGA, Speedmaster Professional (T Swiss Made T), "Tachymètre", s.k. "Moon Watch", "CB case", Cal 321, Serie nr. 25445260, Ref nr. ST 105.012, Boett nr. 105012-66 (CB), Bracelet Ref nr. 1171/1/633, ca 1967. Starting bid is €5000. Thanks!
Wrong sweep hand Serial seems a bit high, but is close Facets are very weak and case lines are soft Hands are rough Lume is dirty and not very attractive Bezel looks pretty good Correct pushers Later bracelet Movement look a clean Depending on price, might be a decent daily wearer after service and correct sweep hand.
If you're looking at a CB case you need the aspects which define it - the facets. On this example they appear to have been almost polished away which is a shame. The rest of the case also looks a bit soft which isn't great and the hands are poor. However, the scratches on the crystal make me think it's pretty much a barn find, not prepped for sale. A new crystal will improve the look of the dial, as will new aged hands. I also think the bezel will be improved with a good clean around the inner edge. The case condition and average dial plots will prevent this from being a top example, but it will be massively improved with a good clean and service.
Thanks for the information Davidt and watchknut! According to SM101 the serial is within the correct range. I had totally missed the sweep hand! Since I am a novice regarding watches. What is the problem with weak facets and a soft case? What would a reasonable price be for this watch?
An over polished or soft case means the sharp, string lines the case should have have been polished away and rounded off. This is a big negative. I'd say this is the definition of a 'running' watch on the sp101 price chart. The bezel condition is a plus, but the dial condition is a negative.
Hello Jackee. If you read the section on Speedmaster101 that deals with the 105.012-66 case variations. (CB and HF cases) you will see that the definite facet lines that are peculiar to the CB cases are a plus feature. . If these are polished away the watch loses this distinctive case attribute.
Thanks again for your help and information! To be honest I had a super hard time to see the difference between the facets. It was like an epiphany when I finally saw it. I have been steering at those pictures for the last 30 mins. Why would someone polish them away? €5000 is an OK price I guess then. I can live with the facet thing. But I will have to change the sweep hand and give it a good clean. Thanks again!
I have just viewed the watch IRL and I think it looks much better then in the pictures. Now I just need to decide how much my max bid will be.
It's just a myth based on assumptions alone since nobody actually ever knows first-hand or has any evidence of that "polishing".
Well the bezel alone is worth the better part of $4K these days, so if you can get it for $5K run and don't look back.
