    Afternoon all,

I’m trying to expand my knowledge on Speedmasters. I’d love to add one to the collection, but I’m limited on what’s the best way to go about it.

Buying one new is £3,810 - which I quite like the idea of. It’s new, not been messed with and not polished/dial change etc.

BUT....as my knowledge is limited, could the said £3,810 be better spent on an older, better edition that’s more collectible? There’s sooooo many variants, im puzzled.

    Enlighten me :)

    Thank you.

It does depend a bit what you are after, do you want a brand new Speedy or do you lean rather toward a vintage Speedy that might have some patina?

The problem is if you go vintage is that that’s a minefield and I think if you don’t know what you are doing you might up buying the cat in the sack. Like said above, read up and I’d you find something then don’t hesitate to post it here and see what other forum members think.

This is what is making me lean towards a new one, I don’t have enough confidence to go buying a vintage yet - I would probably end up with a lemon. Plus with my wants, like wanting an unpolished one for example, new might be best.

Vintage Speedmasters look amazing. Like you I'm apprehensive about pulling the trigger on one for fear of buying a lemon. I was burned pretty bad on a vintage ebay watch that ended up needing a ton of service that was very costly.

If you keep an eye out on the "For Sale" section of this forum, some members will sell some of those vintage speedys you're looking for.

    My 2 cents ...

There are quite a few reputable reseller on this forum. Do your own research and buy the seller, even it might cost you a bit more :)

Edited: I want to clarify that don't be afraid to go the vintage route. I bought several pieces before and it turned out just fine.

In the same position, a new one sounds nice, but some lovely older models out there as well.
