Hello, Can anyone tell me if this is a good buy?

The Seller has provided the following information:
"brass cased Seamaster that i have polished and have an totally overhauled Lemania 1340 movement.
New pushers and crown, lens and gaskets.
    Pvd black back.
Modded with white tachyring and blue chrono hand.
Its 38 mm wide and have 22 mm lugs.
    Hirsch Grand Duke strap.
All in very good condition and the case is getting som patina at the time."

"Watch is from the late 70's and restored at my watchmaker 4 years ago, then just part of my collection, runs perfect."

Help! As I am no watch expert - looking for the perfect vintage watch for a gift. Thank you!

    Hi sba
I know you took umbrage at a previous response of mine in a different thread (which genuinely wasn't mean to be critical)
but by way of regaining your trust....;)
If a listing has words like 'modded' or 'restored' then it is code for 'messed around with'
(polished isn't a good word to collectors either)
that's okay if you happen to like the watch anyway -but if you want a collectors piece as a gift i.e. an original watch, then it should ring alarm bells
also- it shouldn't be the same price as an original as you won't be buying value for money
    hope that helps

Try and narrow down your search to a particular type of watch
Ie dress watch or 'tool' watch
Chronographs like the one above tend to be expensive as they more closely resemble modern watches and so are desirable to a larger audience - they are also more expensive to service as they have more complicated movements

The case on that one is exceptionally bad. There should be crisp edges between the case side and top and a brushed sunburst finish on top. The modded hands and bezel are equally out of place. Gold plated 176.007 is a pretty common reference - there are probably 4 decent ones on eBay at any given time.

If your bf likes big watches there is no point in buying him a vintage dress watch
But if he is interested in vintage watches per se then you can't go wrong with a Constellation - they were finest watches Omega produced at the time

Yes I am starting to really like the constellations. He isn't specifically into the larger watches, but I don't want to buy a tiny one either. at this point I've narrowed down to either a constellation (which I think depending on how much I pay I may want one with solid Gold) or a speedmaster pro if I can find one at a good price.

What I like about the watch above is the fact that it has the blue piece, it makes it look different/unique that's the kind of thing I'm looking for. Just something that makes the watch a little different.

Connies aren't tiny they just aren't large
A solid gold Connie will be out of your stand budget I'm afraid closer to CAD 4000 than 2000
Certain Connies wear bigger eg the hidden crown case style and if you like the idea of gold then gold capped versions look really nice
Gold cap isn't gold plated - it's a thick layer of gold applied to a steel body

BTW Gold cap isn't gold plated - it's a thick layer of gold applied to a steel body -and should be well within your budget
here is my gold-capped 168.010 hidden crown dome dial (as opposed to pie-pan dial) in rose gold
it has what is considered to be the finest movement Omega ever produced
-the discolouration on the bottom right lug is just a reflection

you will still have to do a quite a bit of searching to find one but they are out there

Your constellation is beautiful! I have searched and found some things that I like, I will attach all the links below, if I get some feedback on this great! If not, that's ok I don't expect anyone to go through these. I just want to know if there is anything that really stands out in the group, or if all of them are awful:unsure: I've been wrong in the past, so I want to narrow down my list and investigate further on the ones that seem legitimate/special.

All help is GREATLY appreciated! Even just to confirm that I am headed in the right direction.

Well, this maybe heresy on this board but there are some really nice other watches out there. I lust really badly after these:

And this driver's watch: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gruen-Curve...906562?hash=item3f55d426c2:g:~BAAAOSw~bFWHW-CPurchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network

I am in no way associated with this seller except I have bought some really nice Hamiltons from him.

Stay away from the ones that use 'Restored' or 'repainted' or 'redone', especially with regards to the dial.

The second one above is nice. I don't know much about dress watches though, so have some others comment on it.

Another really cool option would be a cal 750 (or better, 751) seamaster ref 166.023 (or 168.032 for the 751 - often casebacks are marked with both ref numbers, so you gotta know which one you're looking at). They have sparkly dials, look great in the sunlight. The 751 is chronometer certified, and the steel ones are not all that common. Not rare, but don't see them too often.

Here's one on ebay. http://m.ebay.com/itm/OMEGA-SEAMAST...SIVE-HERRENUHR-1970-KALIBER-751-/262041331862Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network

Only one pic, not the best condition, but gives you an idea. May be worth asking for more pics.

Here's mine. What's a thread without pics, right?

not sure what went wrong -some of the post missing
the upshot is that whilst 'quite nice' none are worth the money
