hey guys, I’m putting in a bid on this Omega bumper style watch on eBay and need help verifying it. The model number is 2582 with a 351 movement. I tried to find it on Omega’s vintage watch site but no luck and there’s little information online and the buyer can’t seem to help me too much. I’ll post some photos and hope you can help me. I’m not sure if this is a dial that’s typical of a watch from this period and the gold on SS.

This is my first purchase of a vintage watch online so you’re experience would be greatly appreciated.

It's a legitimate Omega watch but a poor redial. I'd walk away.

I was saying the dial looked odd. But I’m just a novice- what makes you guys say it’s a redial? I’d like to learn

Homework: Google "omega 2582" and compare pics. Then come back and we can comment the differences.

Just for my own education, how would everyone say the movement looks? In need of service?

    Does it also look overpolished?

It's often happened with copper coating movements. From the years and impact of chemical liquids used for cleaning, the copper coating eventually disappears. it's only affect the visual condition of the movement and don't affects its technical characteristics

I also suspect it has a refinished dial. Some folks have a bigger aversion to dials that are not original, than others. If you are buying it for your own use, that is one thing. But if you are buying for resale, expect the redone dial to become an issue. Many folks won’t buy them, or only buy them if substantially discounted.

Not that I’m the best and knowing what is what, but I can’t say I’ve found a dial for this model with all Arabic numerals. Is that one way to tell?

Great point. I was mainly looking it at as eventual resale so this wouldn’t be ideal. The seller went onto to say that 2582 have the 351 movement so it’s all genuine and legit but that’s not the only thing that matters here

Would you guys say that the vintage watch catalogue on Omega’s site provides the complete picture what of they’ve produced? Is it a good reference to ensure legitimacy?

The metal numerals and the dial itself are usually original. The main problem are redials, repainted dials. Compare the painted text with this one: https://omegaforums.net/threads/sol...tors-dial-reference-2582-stainless-14k.22411/

It is usually only a single photo of the reference - a reference can and will often have several dial types. As @fjf says, it is the printed text and lines that are the best tells.

I think the generous folks here will be happy to help, the following guidelines will also be to your advantage:

Don’t take the piss - ie ask about 10 watches in one thread (especially when 8 are blatantly poor)
Stay appreciative and polite, always helps no end
Do some work yourself, if you can show what your research suggests others will help fill in the blanks
Hang around a while, and when possible try to give back
Post pictures not links - you were right first time with this one

And hey presto, before you know it you’ll have 10 nice watches and be writing posts like this one to other noobs!

Here’s another one I’ve found. This doesn’t look like a redial owing to the patina seen. Movement looks clean as does everything else. But I don’t notice a signed crown of Seamaster deboss on the caseback. What do you think?
