Help me chose between two 16610’s

I know, I know. I hate these threads too. The decision is subjective and it’s down to me to decide, but I’d appreciate anyone who wanted to venture their opinion.

I’ve been really into 90’s Rolex this year for a couple of reasons. 1. I’ve never had a 5 digit Rolex sports model until this year, but have found myself drawn to them more and more, particularly tritium versions, 2. I’ve been more into Rolex over the last couple of years but the modern 6 digit don’t really appeal to me and 3. As I have two young children I find myself seeking out watches that are more robust or easily repaired than some of the 60’s models I usually buy, where damaging a bezel etc can lead to a frustrating and expensive search for a replacement.

So, I’ve bought these two 16610’s over the last couple of months.
The first is a 1990 version, lovely tritium dial with beautiful patina. The case is fairly sharp but the facets aren’t present. There’s also a scratch on the bezel.
The second is a 1998 version, still tritium but much paler. However, the case is much sharper, retaining the sharp facets and the green caseback sticker.

So, I’m likely only going to keep one and sell the other to fund something else. Which one would you keep?

Watch 1

Watch 2.

David, the crown guards are for me an important detail.
And nr 2`s looks much better than nr 1`s, could you confirm that nr 2 is in a much better shape?

The mismatched lume color on hands and dial would be a constant distraction for me on watch #1.

The crown guards are indeed much better on number two. I just love the dial of number 1.

That really doesn’t bother me. I just find the lume plots so lovely.
in fact I tend to assume that perfectly matching hands and dials seem suspicious

In my experience, original dials and hands match each other more often than not, and if they age differently the hands are darker. Not always, but usually.

The dial is nice, but mismatch like that draws my eye and decreases my enjoyment of a watch. This is why it is pointless to ask other people for their subjective opinions.

Is it possible for you to place them side by side,
And shoot some pictures?

Hi Hans. Not today as I’ve only got one with me but I will do this week.

Yes I agree. I’m usually the first to roll my eyes at these kind of threads but it hasn’t stopped me asking in this case.

But if you like 1 keep it, 2 will be a much easier sale if prices are similar IMO.

Im kinda hoping that now @Dan S has mentioned it, the hands will stick out to me and make selling watch 1 easier.

You can't put the case details back, but the dial has got 8 years to age like watch no 1. So it's watch no 2 for me.

TBH, this thread is very interesting!
When a trusted and well know Forum Member needs advice regarding almost identical watches,
(and these are identical to most of the people on the planet😉),
the answers, comments etc are very informative!
Looking forward to learn more!

#2 — the Tritium will age as you enjoy it. 10 years from now, it will likely look better than #1.

#3....
Have a watchmaker swap the dial and hands from #1, into the case of #2. Best of both worlds.
