Stopped into my local OB today and tried on both the standard Speedy Pro and the FOIS. I’ve read a lot of threads on here (thank you) comparing the two - I think I’ve got the basics down of what’s different between them - but would love your opinion on how each suit my wrist. Not the greatest photos, but they’ll have to do... I felt a little rushed with the salesperson there. My wrist is about 6.3-4”. I think the bracelet vs strap is throwing me off a bit. I do prefer the leather and would swap the bracelet out on the Moonwatch. Thanks, all!
My wrist is 6.5” and I just went through the same decision. I bought the pro with bracelet but only after trying it on leather. The leather makes all the difference wears much smaller imho. I knew I could swap to leather but am enjoying the watch on the steel for now. FOIS is nice but it’s not the original.
I'd check the lug-to-lug width on both as well. Both will wear a little large on you. In my experience, if a watch isn't comfortable, you'll be disappointed long-term. My personal vote would be for Speedmaster Professional and throw it on a NATO.
Buy the one you like best, and if you buy used, you could nearly get both for the price of one at retail.
See if this helps or hinders …. And I would start with the standard if I had to pick but would like both :0)
When buying Speedmaster, for me the mantra is this: 1. Vintage Speedy (1971 or earlier); 2. FOIS 3. Modern Pro (005) Had modern Pro, enjoyed it. Now I have FOIS, love it. Next Speedy will be 68 or 69. Then again, might keep the FOIS and get vintage anyway.
You can't go wrong with the classic Speedy. That would be my vote...especially if Omega decides to change the movement in future iterations...!
Thanks, all! And awesome photoshop job, @Omegafanman - that really does help! It’s a tough call. The bracelet was throwing me off and I was leaning toward the FOIS, but I did prefer the Hesalite as I was rotating the watch and viewing through the crystal at all angles. I’m in the process of reducing down from 7 to 2 and am looking for my daily (the other was a gift from my wife)... if I pick the FOIS I’m just concerned I’ll still think about the Speedy Pro. Ultimately, though, it’s got to be the one that feels right... really appreciate everyone’s advice as I decide between two great choices!
My wrist is the same size and my Speedy Pro wears well, if toward the larger end of what I'm able to wear. The other option you have, though I wouldn't recommend it for your first -- I'd get the original before getting any other variants -- is the 60th anniversary model. I just bought one and at 38.6mm, it fits wonderfully. On top of that, it has a much better bracelet than the standard Speedy, in my opinion.
What sort of discount do you all think could be achieved from an AD on either of these 2 models? Thanks
If you did not buy from the AD how would you get it? Look at the used and grey market / online prices you could achieve / consider any risks and then be open with the AD...''I really want to buy from you but I can get an online/used deal etc of ??? so can you get nearer that price''.... Just ask them to give you their best price and that is your answer. Don't muck them around and don't expect them to match the other prices. Another / an extra option is to buy more than one item / buy regularly from them. Over time I have found I get more discount that way but if a watch is in high demand then the market will still set the price.
My vote goes for the Speedmaster Pro. You can always swap out the bracelet for a NATO or another leather strap. Just go with your gut though!
