Help in identifying 2998 seahorse box

Hi guys,

I’m looking for some help in identifying what references this vintage box would have come with.

Unfortunately there is very little information I can find about these online, just a few past sales or peoples social media posts referencing that the box is rarer than the watch…

i had a sale lined up where the buyer pulled out a day later for fear that it didn’t match his exact reference and I’m just looking to confirm which references this could have come with moving forward…

I know that it came with a 2998-5 (because I have the watch) but some things I’ve seen online suggest that it could also be correct for a 2915 ?

I see some boxes with the cut out on the diagonal and some horizontal like mine ?

Any knowledge anyone has on this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Alex

I should add, that I’m not looking for a value assessment nor is this currently available for sale anymore…it was listed on an auction website elsewhere but I’ve decided not to sell for the moment…

I’m really just looking for information on the subtle differences between the 2915 and 2998 boxes…

Perhaps William @Spacefruit might be persuaded to comment on this since he has likely seen more of these watches than anyone most likely ?

MWO shows the Sea Horse box with gold Seahorse and OMEGA on top with gold border around lid. The inside is lined with beige corderoy, and has the watch slot diagonally. The inside cover has OMEGA HIGH PRECISION in all caps. References observed include 2915, 2998, 105.003.

Your box shows silver Sea Horse, no OMEGA on top, no border. Lining is grey corderoy. The watch slot is not diagonal, and the inside lid text looks different, OMEGA is very widely spaced, and High Precision is not in caps.

Is this significant? Who knows, but as these are often sold at very high prices I wouldnt be surprised if there are Knock offs.

The seahorse on mine is gold and the corduroy is beige…if it looks silver/grey that’s just the lighting in the photo…

I’m not at all concerned about the authenticity , I bought this from the original owner who got it for a high school graduation gift in ‘61…I just don’t see the box being a knockoff

I have stored this photo on my HD (internet source unknown) - it shows the same box with (what seems to be) a Speddy ref 2915
It indicates that this box might be a very early version...
Maybe this helps?
