Its more complex than that there are a lot of dial variations on every model (geneve, constellation, seamaster ) some rare like the black dial ones and others which are more easily to find like the silver dial ones .

I second this.

Plus, the different types of hour indexes bring variations in silver dial De Villes.

I think my husband is looking for a great and unique piece vs. specifically the Don Draper look. It does seem like silver dial Devilles are more common than this Cosmic. Or that just me being new? Lol.

I would discourage you from focusing on perceived rarity, since that does not necessarily correspond to desirability.

Some great advice here and I’m sure your husband will love whatever you decide to go with. All I would add is buy the best example (of the watch you chose) that you can find within your budget. A vintage Omega watch is an absolute treasure whatever the model 😀

You guys have been great! Thanks for helping me out!

found this one also - about $1000, claims to be all original. I figure - it’s not a De Ville and it is several years younger but the aesthetic is similar. Thoughts?
Case and dial are in excellent condition.
These are wonderful pieces which the c type case gives a wonderful 70’s feel when closely examined.

I don’t hate the price on it personally.

Regarding the Cosmic, I agree with @Dan S that they're quite a departure from the look of a DeVille and those 70's Cosmic cases aren't to everyone's taste.

Personally I'd much prefer a silver dial DeVille or Seamaster to a black dial Cosmic.

If you like Cosmics, that seems to be a nice one. Price is not awful. But as others have said, the C case isn't to everyone's taste.

The cosmic is beautiful, I would be over the moon if my wife picked this up for me.

Dear Vic, I personally think this C-Shape looks good and like TIMElyBehaviour, I would be super happy if my better half would give this to me. Your husband is a lucky man.

If your husband is looking for a unique look, and if he is open, I reckon he would maybe like the C-Design.

The price on your watch is not cheap, but the watch is in fantastic condition...

I have recently bought a similar watch, a Connie (Constellation) with a C-Shape and also a black dial.

Another video where you see another identical Connie:

I think I know who the seller is for this watch. Good guy, but make sure you make him an offer, he is generally open to those. Don't be shy from making one lower than asking. It's only fair that you pay a fair price. Good dealer though, you should get your watch in as-described condition and quickly too - unless your home country customs make it difficult.

That Seamaster Cosmic found by VicM with its particular dial styling is quite dramatic, yet understated. I like it. I'd wear it. I'd be tickled to spot it on a wrist in the wild.

Those are nice photos of it, but I bet it looks even better in person.

One could do a lot worse with vintage Omega.

I agree. The case condition and dial will be stunning in hand.

If you don’t buy that Cosmic, I would be tempted. It’s a very attractive piece, IMO.

Well said @Rudi99 😉
Dear @VicM, you are really great and your husband is lucky to have you. I personally like C cases very much and they have quite a history and have been designed by one of the industry legends Gerard Genta. Actually I went into vintage Omegas rabbit whole because of this watch, which was bought with the help of esteemed OF members.

I do not think it was said what C shape means - basically it is the shape of the case looking from above which resembles two Cs looking at each other. This watch was symbol of non conformism - Desmond nailed it.

That being said I do understand black dialed crosshair dials affection 😉 My next vintage was dial's "background refinished" Constellation - I was aware of that fact when buying and it was reflected in the price.

For me with vintage it is about ascethics, history and soul.

I would be personally happy with any watch my wife would buy me - she did actually and both of them made me very happy! That being said I would be over the moon, if gifted Omega Constellation with print out of some Desmond's essays - watch and history to dig in? Perfect. Whatever watch you will decide to give him he would be happy and I agree with this advice - please try to find it here OF private watch sales section and if you will decide to go elsewhere please make sure to post the best quality photos you can get from seller! I hope this helps and all the best!

Based on everyone’s guidance and advice, I ended up purchasing the Cosmic! I was a little torn about it but I was able to make up my mind when even those of you guys who may not be particularly fond of the style agreed that it was of good quality. I imagine that in the condition it’s in, it should continue to hold on to its value and possibly be a stepping stone to other things for my husband. If, in five years he wants to work out a trade or sell it for a down payment for something different, I would certainly not be upset.

I can’t thank everyone enough for their kindness and wealth of knowledge - I feel that I truly would never have been able to feel like I made an informed decision if not for this thread. I’ll take some photos once it arrives!!

You sure did well. He will be happy and lucky to wear an Omega. I like the fact that it reflects a lost era where music and cinema were cool.

I'm sure your husband will be delighted.

Has the Cosmic been serviced?
