Does anyone know of a reference site to help me identify a vintage Ultra-Chron? It was purchased in Switzerland in 1968 and has a screw-on back but that is all I know. I have been unable to remove the case back to see the movement but can provide pictures of the watch. Thanks
With my new Longines knowledge I'd guess a 43x movement...as mentioned above pictures are needed for more assistance.
Might be a later model, as in 1972 or after. That would make it a 28,800 bph version caliber 6641 or 6651 instead of the earlier 1967 - 1972 36,000 bhp 431. Are you sure it was purchased in 1968?
I know it is no older then 1968 as it was purchased prior to moving to the US in late 1968. Could it be a Swiss only or pre/limited production version?
There's an easy way to answer all questions: open it up and post clear pictures of the inside of the case back and movement. All the numbers we need are there.
I wish I could get pictures of the movement. Unfortunately the case back has not been opened in 40+ years and will not budge. I do not want to damage the watch but if anyone has some suggestions I will give them a try.
Packing tape. Wad it up, sticky side out, into a ball then press & twist away. *DON'T DO THIS WITH ANY CASEBACK THAT HAS A MEDALLION, ESPECIALLY PAINTED ONES!
No Luck. Does anyone know of a safe way to open a stuck caseback? Also, could this be a "pop" style case that requires the stem to be removed? Based on the caseback I did not think so but I have never had a watch so hard to open.
You need to see a qualified watchmaker. What has likely happened is that the "waterproof" gasket has turned to mush and cemented the case shut. A good watchmaker should have the tools to unstick the gasket and replace it. Hope this helps, gatorcpa
Does anyone know a good watchmaker in the PA/NJ (USA) area? Or any recommendations for an online watchmaker? Thanks for your help
