Hey everyone. I'm trying to learn what I can about the inner workings of what makes a watch tick and am wondering what might have happened to the 552 movement up for auction on the Bay. The rotor looks like @ss and I am wondering if that is corrosion due to water or moisture damage. Can the experts chime in? I really want to learn so that when I decide to go for some vintage pieces I have at least a bit of working knowledge. http://www.ebay.com/itm/161278059235?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:ITPurchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
Just looks like fingerprints and light scratches to me. Macro photography can really magnify imperfections. If you want a kind of "Watches For Dummies" try this: http://www.watchtalkforums.info/forums/thread22496.html It was written by a dummy.
Here's a bumper that had moisture get into the case: Now that's a corroded rotor. The green stuff cleaned off during a service, but it left the copper plating damaged and discolored. Here's another bumper that the copper washed off of, probably because too harsh of a cleaning agent was used during one service.
Pure curiosity: Which avatar do you like better - the "Omega Recycling" one I use here or the "Out of Focus" one I use there?
I like this one, because the other one hurts my brain. However, the reason might be due to me polishing off half a bottle of laphroaig 18 this evening...
I'm half full, the bottle is half empty, and the mrs has hid my wallet so I don't go on an ebay spree. Damn good woman I have.
The reason I wonder about this one is the rotor. That looks more like neglect or some kind of gunk or dirt or corrosion than fingerprints. I asked the seller but his English language response was lacking.
