Hey everyone! I just picked up this old Omega Automatic Geneve for free at a garage sale. I've always loved vintage Omega watches and was so excited when I found this. It's very dirty and I haven't tried to clean it at all yet. Looks like there's a small crack on the right side of the crystal near the crown and there's excessive wear on the case too. It's currently not running, but I'm curious of people's opinions on if it would be worth getting services and running since it has so much wear on the case. Even though the plating is worn the metal underneath still looks nice. Thank you all! I'm really looking forward to learning more on this forum and contributing as I can.
Welcome to OF! Great to find a treat at a garage sale - the daydreams of all of us. If you have questions about this piece, best to post it in the vintage omega section https://omegaforums.net/forums/vintage-omega-watches-help-discussion-and-advice.23/. I hope it cleans up nicely for you!
Welcome to the forum, and congrats on finding a free watch. Sorry to be the bearer of news that may be disappointing- but the cost of service is prohibitive for this watch. Service for an automatic movement costs between 200-400 USD depending on what country/ what area you live. It’s not worth it for this watch. Collectors usually shun plated watches because plating is fragile. Plating that’s come off like this one is considered a total no-no. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but no one would consider that « the metal underneath is nice ». THe dial and the movement however might have some value as parts if the dial hasn’t been refinished. At least you have not paid anything for it. Best regards Edit/add/ sorry if my assessment came across as a bit harsh. It was meant to be factual. I’m just trying to avoid you spending money unwisely.
OP, I forgot to mention, this is where we roast you a bit for the betterment of everyone's buying decisions
If you are doing this for an investment, let the watch be. Otherwise, if you like it and want to wear it, take it to a watchmaker to see what it will cost to get it running. Kelly Hunter at Art of the Watch is a very good watchmaker in Portland.
