Hi All, I found the forum after researching a possible purchase of a vintage Omega. I have a modern Seamaster, a Nomos Tangente and a beater TAG. Being fond of all things retro, I would like one (or maybe two) period watches. I suppose this is very common, but a watch from my birth year would be special, but that's for the future. I see that the members here very kindly offer support and advice on how to choose wisely, which is great. From reading the newbie threads, a common recommendation is to avoid repainted dials, and yes, I am drawn to shiny stuff. So.....and I understand this flies in the face of wisdom, and trying to justify myself by quoting another piece of advice, which is 'buy what you like'....I think this watch advertised as an '18k 1947 mechanical watch with a repainted dial' is lovely to look at, but probably not worth the 945 GBP being asked for it. Hi Tim and welcome As @ulackfocus says, it's not worth the money. Have a look on the WRUW thread and you'll see plenty of very nice (and shiny ) watches with original dials. You can also look in the Private sales forum here as there are some nice watches in there. If a lot of people who've been here a while are liking the advert, you should be looking at something nice. OK, browsed the FS forum and nothing is leaping out today..maybe I need to be more patient, or maybe..this is described as "In every respect, this watch is totally original" and very pretty at 975GBP. A 'double signed dial', does that impact price? I hope I am not wearing out my welcome, Thanks again Tim
Redial. It never fails. The quest for "Ooooooo, shiny and pretty!" ALWAYS leads n00bs to the overpolished redials.
If you believe that, I have some land on high ground to sell you in the Everglades. The watch is a concocted redial. The hands are either totally incorrect or the redial wasn't printed to the original specification. I know the seller, and would highly advise you to stay away from them unless you know what you are doing. That firm is noted for this type of hyperbole and falsely redialled watches. At least you are smart enough to ask questions first. You're best bet would be to stick around here and start looking at items on the sales forums. Especially the Private Sales forum, these are members who are required to contribute to the collective knowledge before listing watches for sale. I guess the effort and specialised knowledge to take sellers who blatantly mis-describe goods to task isn't forthcoming then. I understand caveat emptor, but this is taking it to a whole new level!
No - more like a better me person. Nothing gets me to feel bad like christmas. Knowing my wife has actually planned my gifts for months and me not having bought any yet - or even have an idea what to get. And it is the 24:th tomorrow (gift time in Sweden). I am reaching panic time and that often results in opening up the wallet and buying something totally useless and too expensive. I would like to be a new person...
In an ideal world, yes, but the scale of the problem is such that it'd be like King Canute ordering the tide not to come in, and life's just too short for that. The usual response of unscrupulous sellers when called out is to respond aggressively or not at all.
