When my home was broken into back in 2020 they found both sets of keys to my car, took that, took the house keys, my wallet, and the Apple AirPods, the Rolex Daytona was sitting next to the airpods and got left behind.

Not funny you got broken into, but funny they left the watch! I have wondered about this before, do opportunistic thieves even recognise and properly search for valuable items, or do they just effectively smash and grab? I imagine if I was broken into they'd take obvious valuables like game consoles and car keys and such, I do kind of slightly hide the watches (usually) but it wouldn't be so hard to find them if you had time.

I've also encrypted all my computers, servers and backups but realistically it's unlikely a thief would take them as they're all either bolted into a rack or very heavy. Still, I'd rather have absolute confidence my life in data is secure than worry about that 0.1% chance.

Encryption of disks makss sense if the computer is turned off, which, for a server, kind of defeats its purpose.

Well the server will hardly be turned on once the hypothetical thief unplugs it to take it home with them, will it? 😜

For a fake Rolex?
I think the point was that the robbers did not know it was fake.

Not to get into the mechanics of it all, but the process doesn’t end at just the theft part… it has to be turned into cash as well. Hence what to take becomes a factor based on how it can be moved on. Getting rid of jewelry isn’t that straightforward. I’ll stop there…
And no I’m not into that line of work 😀

There was an break in at the lokal university some years ago. They stole many of the screens to the mainframe computer, probably thinking they were easily sold computers. Offcourse they were useless with out the mainframe, The tiefs were lokal junkies who some how had gotten a set of keys. They had also ransacked all first aid kits in search of drugs. Not the brightest bunch of thieves.

I talked to a professional thief once, he worked far from his place of residence, planned everything and mostly with commersial places that had safes or other valubales that were easy to sell in bigger quantitys to fences. He never broke into residential homes. The majority how ever are people with drug problems seeing an opportunity on their way home from the city centre.

Later on home invasions to really rich peoples homes were popular, holding the family ransom to get to the safe and valubales, before tying up the residents and disapering, Alarmsystems and cc cameras, along with the wealties contact with authorities have reduced this.

All the spelling errors make these anecdotes even more tedious to read than they would otherwise be.

local, not lokal. valuables, not valubales. wealthy, not wealty, commercial, not commersial. of course, not offcourse. thieves, not tiefs. quantities, not quatitys.

Thank you teach, you know not everybody on this forum are english speakers, so a bit of wiggle room is wanted. Thank you also for the tedious task of writhing out all my faults. I am sure your days could have been better without this task of complaining all the time.

And ofcourse you know, you always have the option of scrolling past any post. And I hope that in the future you will do that with mine.

There is honour amongst thieves, so even the most hardened criminals respect the waitlist.

Tldr: title

I've had my friend get robbed (with his girlfriend with him) in his apartment for his fake Rolex. Somebody casing the joint obviously thought it was a real one.

He wasn't even wearing it when they came in but they knew he had one.
If anyone comments on my Seamaster (210.30.42.20.06.001), I tell them it cost me $20 in a Bali street market.

Sad truth is thieves tend to be poor, uneducated, dumb besides, and easily caught. So the chance that you'd be targeted for your Omegas by a smart thief is extremely small. As already said, Rolexes, maybe. But if a thief is really intelligent, there are far better targets than Omega watches.

For example, an intelligent thief will consider that sure, a guy might have 20 Omegas worth 100k, but the chance that they are all in a safe is high. Go get 1 nice painting, get the same 100k, and chances are it's on the wall, not in a safe.

Fortunately for us, or unfortunately, most people don’t know what Omega is. Rolex, Rolex, Rolex is all anyone knows. IYKYK. I’m fine with that.

I think you can get robbed of anything. I had a two tone bulova on some idiot tried to take from me. Honestly had he acted like he had a weapon and stood at little distance but he went hands on I reacted he said “ok ok I’m leaving”.

I’m also in prisons and jails often for work and these guys (some) will rob you for a wedding ring. I don’t think you are being targeted for a particular watch by the “non sophisticated” robbers. Just something that might feed the habit.

I have heard "loads" about Rolex. They are very recognisable. People get in trouble even in the hotels.
I have heard about Omega only once (sorry for my English as well). The guy was working in Africa on a serious position, but that night decided to have party with black beautiful ladies. By the morning he discovered his Seamaster 300 had disappeared, luckily he found it on a local street market and was able to check his watch number, so be careful with ladies.

There are always some desperate arseholes who'd steal the bridal off a nightmare!
