Did you know it's National Hoagie Day here in the US? I know it gets overshadowed by the other holiday. However, if you knew the story behind that Mexican holiday maybe you'd celebrate Hoagie Day instead. Most people don’t know that back in 1912, Hellmann’s mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the Titanic did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day, each year on May 5th. It is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.
May 6th is the anniversary date of the two biggest disasters ever to happen to NJ: the Hindenburg and me.
Heh! All the great people are born in the month of May. The Hindenburg was a dreadful disaster. Looks like they "would have seen that one coming," using hydrogen as they did.
Sorry Dennis- https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/sinko-de-mayo/ But Happy Birthday tomorrow! Couldn't find anything on Snopes about that. gatorcpa
Here in the Netherlands, we celebrate our liberation from German occupation on the 5th of May (1945). So to any Americans, Canadians, Brits and Poles on these boards: a belated thank you (or in most cases, your parents I guess )
According to reports I have read, Titanic sank on April 14! Pray tell, what might that have to do with May 5, and national hoagie day?
