Great Grandfathers Omega Watch

Hi Folks,

This is my first time posting to the Omega forums.

Here's what brings me in to these neck of the woods...........I'm curious to know more about my great grandfathers watch.

All I know is it was made before the 60's?.

If anyone knows anything about the history of the watch or roughly how much it's worth - I would LOVE to hear!

Ok, can you do some more photos including of the caseback, and try to zoom out a little and get the dial in better focus? We need that clarity.

At a glace, you've got a triple date moonphase, which is likely a redial (refinished dial). See if there are any stamps into the lugs (like indentations) that could be hallmarks if its a solid gold case (and photo that).

I'll have to wait on someone better versed to call whether its a redial or not, but I have to say, if its original I'd be interested in purchasing it if you were in the mood to sell it

Definitely a redial, but I think I saw a solid gold hallmark on the case.



I have seen new dials for these sold by WatchCo in the past. No idea if they would have any more.

These watches were never very waterproof, so the dials deteriorated rapidly. As a result, at some point, likely in the 60s, 70s or 80s, a watchmaker repainted the dial so it looked new-ish again. Its never quite the same, but in that era it was an acceptable practice.

Thanks for the info.

My mom's had the watch since her grandfather died in 1971 and, therefore, knows nothing has been "redone" since.

What does this imply for its monetary value?

Does the watch run, and keep good time? If Gator's correct and I'm almost certain he is, its a solid gold watch, its definitely a genuine Omega, and the triple date moonphase is a good model. The fact that its a redial hurts it a lot, as if it were all original and clean, it would be a very valuable watch. Its still worth good money though.

That the dial finish was stripped off and repainted at some time in the past. Yes, it hurts the collector value a lot. But a solid gold Omega Cosmic is still a valuable watch.

You watch's dial probably looked like this before the redial:



Sadly, for these watches, the above is very common, as the cases were not water resistant in any way.

My mom winds it up it the morning and evening and wears the watch everyday.

On occasion it runs 10-15 minutes fast.

The moon phase hasn't worked in years.

She was told it would cost $400 just to open the watch up. This wouldn't include any costs to fix the problem.

They did however offer her $2000 for it!
