Just wanted to share some pictures of this Constellation 168.005 with an interesting gray dome dial. There are a couple of others out there that I have seen, but I wonder if these are service dials similar to the blue Soleil Speedmaster dials. Anyway, here are some pictures. The gray is almost blue in some light and has a really unique tone.
I had a conversation a little while ago with a certain Omega enthusiast who was of the opinion they are service dials.
Brown dome dials occasionally pop up too - and have been deemed legit on OF - but are as uncommon as the greys I wonder if they could have been special order at some point (as black dials were originally) it might be useful to understand when lume inserts were phased out on Constellations - as it wouldn't make sense to make a later service dial with old-style indices I'm fairly sure they were used on .004s but I can't recall an .010 or anything other than an early 168.005 with lume inserts - they tend to be onyx/painted inserts or solid indices with notches for lume or lume dots (or both black inserts and lume dots in some cases) @kyle L - any chance of getting the movt no. for this watch? either way (unlike the browns) it’s a great look
Are the white inlays or painted. Have seen a few grey dome dials over the years. Non as nice as above.....
Yes, and the lume on the dial is much lighter than on the hands, making one also suspect a service dial.
Not a comment on originality, as I am not versed in these, but the different "M"s on the sunburst dial look very strange.
I was going to comment on that myself - the lume in the indices is quite light and 'minty' compared to the hands. However, here's an early 168.005 I came across in a search (20,99xxx) where the lume is distinctly different in the indices and looks quite aged, so no real reason to suspect a lume job (not quite as minty but if these were against a grey dial they would certainly stand out)
Thanks for that Hoi - good to know. Is it an early one by any chance? Some of them came with a 561 didn’t they?
Well that was a lucky stab in the dark. But it does begin to build a case that the grey dial is contemporaneous and not a later service dial.
