I just received my grandfather's Speedmaster Professional Mark II. Since this is my first Omega watch, I started to do some research on it. He bought it in 1970.

I sent it to Omega to get it working again, and I just got it back today. It looks great!

However, from what I understand the Speedmaster Professional Mark II uses the 861 caliber (in fact it was listed as such on the work order sheet I got back from Omega).

The 861 caliber is a manual wind, right? When I got it back, I opened the box and looked at the watch. The second hand wasn't running. I picked it up, moved it around a bit back and forth, and the second hand started running!

Isn't that behaving like an automatic winding watch?

When the watch stopped running on the way back from Omega, there was still some residual tension in the mainspring. When you shook it, you overcame some slight friction and it started up again. Odds are it did not run for long, and at some point, when the mainspring is completely unwound, no amount of shaking will start it again.

Sounds like a nice watch. Got pics?
