    Hey folks.

I found this locally and I've read about how some of the GS medallions can wear and tear over time.

I'm wondering if this is acceptable to collect or do I need to give it a pass?

It might look like someone tried to pry it open?

I’ve never seen wear and tear like that. Usually it is the raised “seiko,” “GS,” and Daini lightning bolt that erodes first and reveals the base metal underneath.

These medallions were hot-pressed on to the caseback. This looks more like someone did a poor job of gluing a replacement medallion.

    Hey

Thanks for replying. How do you confirm that its a replacement medallion? (how do you identify it as a real or a fake?)

    Thank you!

Here's a GS case back with wear the watch is in great shape other than the case back medallion. From time to time I have seen replacement medallions for these but never bothered to pick one up
    Quick and dirty pic
On the wrist the watch looks great but the case back leaves a lot to be desired

The medallion appears to be correct, except that it is a replacement. Probably new old stock. They are out there. It just doesnt appear to have been applied correctly and might fall one day if and when the glue fails.

Fake medallions are easy to spot since the font or size of the SEIKO and GS is usually wrong or the company logo undefined, and they have a noticeably duller shine than the originals.

The 4522 is a nice reference though. For the right price and condition (of the rest of the watch), I wouldn’t let the issue with medallion get in the way. Especially since the separation seems limited to a small portion of the medallion.

That would depend on the condition of the case and lugs. These grammar of design pieces are sensitive to even light polishing.

If that’s your assessment then you know more than I do. These are a bit tricky to judge in pictures because their design was made to reflect light at particular angles. You can have a pic that shows the contour of the sides but not the lugs, etc. Really, the best way to tell is to look at lots of pics of good examples online, then hold the watch in person (which is what you have done).

It is a nice piece. It even has the box. :)

Very nice! Yours is the last case model to feature the medallion. The 7111s only had stamped 'KS' on the back, while the 7113s did not have anything.

I don't see how gluing on a replacement medallion would make it look like someone tried to pry it off.
I've seen a few pics that looked like that, & assumed that someone had tried to pry it off.

That is certainly possible. On the flipside, if I were selling a watch with no medallion, I'd definitely attach a correct replacement to help the sale. As I've said, the medallion in the OP's post wouldn't really bother me.

It's funny how much I have fallen in love with the 45GS. Wearing it close to 80% of my rotation....
