Hope all the New Joisey and Philly OFers are doing okay today. The handful of 'quakes and aftershocks should keep the watches wound for a bit.

I haven't heard much about damage, but a relative in NJ was able to get her Metamucil mixed without having to use a spoon, and a friend who works in downtown Philly said things were okay but there were a lot of people freaking out.

There hasn't been much info on the regular news sources I check, which I assume means there isn't much notable news.

Most of my family is in the Philadelphia/NJ area and I have family on the Connecticut shoreline as well. The reports from family members are that there was palpable shaking for a few secnds but nothing violent. Enough to shake books on shelves and make floors creak though. I'm in south central Pennsylvania not too far from the Maryland border and we felt nothing here although we've certainly had tremors in the past. If memory serves, there's a geographical fault line that runs from the southwest to the northeast about 50 miles east or so of where I live.

Indeed, things did shimmy a bit for a few seconds, but I was wearing a manual wind 🤔

I’m pretty close to the epicenter. Shook the building pretty good for about 10 seconds or so. No mistaking what it was. My mother-in-law’s clock will stop sometimes if the shelf it’s on gets bumped. It’s a bit finicky and was stopped. She said the earthquake shook the clock enough to get it started again. My oldest son lost his first tooth this morning too. I wonder if the quake finally rattled it out of him.

No damage here in NY (at least none that I can see around the house).

Too bad I was wearing a manual today (Speedy).

Thirty years ago or so, there was a minor earth tremor in Idaho Falls, Idaho, about 1050 kms from Calgary, Alberta, where I live. The tremor was rated at a bit over 3. There was no damage in Calgary, but I heard ornaments on our living room shelf unit rattling. A bit scary! Imagine being in the MIDDLE of a tremor like that!

Here's a diagram of the culprit: the Ramapo Fault.

MTG says “Repent!” That map makes me a bit homesick.

It's home for me. Earth tremors, cicadas, traffic, overpriced real estate. I wouldn't live anywhere else.

Corporate transfer to the North Shore of Chicago in 2001. I have all those things plus a wonderful “ lake” to play on and no retiree income taxes. Jersey really needs to fix that. I do miss the physical beauty of WNW NJ.

I live over the line in Pennsylvania so no retiree income taxes for me either, but I'm still working at this point. For me, the big draw is the nearness to the ocean. I don't think that I could live in the Midwest and be that far from the water. The Great Likes are nice (we have Lake Erie here in PA), but it's just not the same as the Atlantic.

My wife felt that way but has since changed her tune. She’s a huge fan of our inland seas now.

We felt it here in western Mass. I thought they were doing tree work nearby as it felt very similar to when I had a huge oak removed and they let sections of the trunk drop.

Regarding the physical beauty of northwest NJ, I agree. I went to college in Madison and my best friend lived in Hamburg, and I always felt like NJ was unfairly maligned by those who only see it from I-95.

That was funny. I started reading this and felt a shimmer.
Checked USGS and sure enough there was a little 3.4 earthquake near Berkley. So I was probably close to being on top of it.
Been pretty quiet here lately.
Of course the Big 1906 San Francisco quake and fire was on the 18th of April. So that always gets a lot of press this time of year. I used to dress up for the anniversary in 1906 costume. These days I do not like going to the City at 5AM. (or any time of day.)

Hmmm, must not be native if you don't say "go to the shore"... 😉

Very native to Philadelphia, actually, and it’s “down the shore.”

Sorry -- it's been decades since I spent parts of the summers in Toms River. There were some regulars from Philadelphia area that always rented in my grandparents' neighborhood, and hung out on the pier every morning crabbing. Baltimore peeps still win, with 'downy ocean' 😎
