Maybe I’ve been reading too much @Tony C. lately but at some point in the last couple months the thought crept into my mind that I should be stockpiling a few solid gold watches just in case things go fully Mad Max on planet Earth. There will have to be something nice on my wrist when it all goes to hell anyway. I was happy to discover some surprising (read neglected) pieces out there at reasonable prices and I didn’t have to settle for the TGDW (tiny gold dress watches). These are all 18k: First off is the Ref 2748 with cal 266. Very wearable. Scary wearable. I would love a ‘69 Apollo but this Ref 145.006 with cal 321 has it’s own charms, gonna be a great summer watch. And lastly this Ref 3950 with bumper cal 342. Some might call it an old man’s watch but it’s a timeless classic, and by the way old man-style is cool. Photographed last weekend with the iPhone camera, hope you enjoyed ... Anyone else been bit by the ‘gold bug’ lately?
Nice pickups! FWIW - when it all goes to hell a gold watch might not be the most practical.... Although I bet you could trade each one of those for a box of twinkies....
I’ll trade you the Geneve for a box of 9mm, but you may have to sweeten the deal with a bottle of scotch.
I picked up a 1950 10k Gruen a few weeks ago. I never liked gold watches until I had a chance to put it on. Knowing that it will make the zombie apocalypse more comfortable for me is a good feeling. It is still at the watchmaker for a crystal repair, but the same model is shown here
You’re right a gold watch might not be practical, but three gold watches is absolutely unreasonable. I’d add that Twinkie filling is highly corrosive to steel (and humans) so I’ll stick with the gold watch.
