Hi guys, I came across this watch in a stainless steel case. But it has a gold medallion on the caseback. Should the watch here have a stainless steel or gold medallion. Thanks for your help?

It's a 14381 and it should have a gold medallion that matches the color of the hour markers and hands.

Thanks Hoi. That's my next question. The omega database says ""De luxe", "pie-pan" type, luminous (radium), with hand-rivetted gold hour markers and gold "Dauphine" hands.". Do the markers and hands look gold? I can't really tell from the photo.

The 5-digit references generally have a gold medallion, even on steel and gold capped cases. The later 6-digit references have steel medallions with steel cases and gold ones on capped or solid gold cases.

    Hope this helps,

That's not a pie pan, that's what's called a railroad dial. The 14.381 usually did come with a pie pan on a caliber 551. There's a couple threads around here about those dials. Just search "railroad" for links to them.

Nice watch, the dial really pops! Especially that mirrored part. I wouldn't mind one of those...

They look gold to me. and the gold color of the medallion should match (there are different kinds of gold, like rose gold , yellow gold etc...) the color of the markers, logo etc....
Here's one of mine, a 14381 with rose gold medallion on back that matches the color of the markers, hands , logo.....on the dial

BTW, that dial is considered as "piepan" in the database.

Here's my 14381 with rose gold cap, with rose medallion, also for any with ultimate curiosity, the tension ring holding the crystal ring is rose gold too. I have to correct matching crown and the original (which was functional worn out) but keep this matching rg crown on for wear and as it winds well. Also it just kind of looks good to me :D. If you could find one of these in solid rose gold it would really be the cats pajamas. BTW , the star is correctly set, it just looks off due to photo, illusion.

I don't buy gold cap for religious reasons, its all yours, though it does look stunning ;)

If a solid gold one comes around...

At some point he's going to wake up one morning, climb out of bed, brush his teeth and say "well, its done, I've got all the Omegas I need"

Its a dream we all have, that day will be the day someone finds an unopened 40 foot shipping container full of NOS 1950s / 1960s Omega watches in their boxes and lists them on the 'bay no reserve

Hmmmm, that watch looks familiar. :p

I need a good 551 example. A railroad dial or a gold capped crosshair dial would do the trick. It's way down the list for now though.

Looks like I should not be feeling too guilty if I use the funds I set aside for a pie pan on it.:D
