    Hey guys.

I'm looking at a Seamaster (166.003) from Catawiki and would very much appreciate your opinions on the authenticity/overall state of this specimen.

Apologies for the pictures (or lack thereof) but it is all I have.

    Thank you very much,

    What’s the price?

    What do you see?

Currently at 220 euros but it is very early on the auction.

I am a bit iffy on the whether the tritium dial is legit, the caseback seems a little bit too good to be true and I'm not sure if the movement is actually alright.

Other than that the watch seems pretty legit to me, but I'm not the most qualified of persons (hence why I am asking for help).

Dial looks fine to me. Case has a bit of polish to it but not horrible.

Did you check to see if the movement is correct for the case using the vintage database on Omegas site?

A crystal polish and I bet the dial will look better.

Caliber 562 is correct fir a 166003. I have some doubts about the crown. It does'nt look sunken like it should be on this model. But that's a tiny thing. I think it's quite attractive. Here is a ss version with a sunken crown

I did, apparently this gold capped model was equiped with either the 562 or the 565.

How much do you think the watch would be worth, as it seems to be right now?

At auction without proof of service I would not pay more then EUR 350/400. I've sold a SS version once for EUR 750 but they are more desiarable. Hope this helps

Thank you very much. The seller has set a reserve price above 500 euros (how much above I still don't know), so I may have to pass on this one.

I think that's wise. Even if you could buy it for EUR 500 you still need to count in a service. And then I think you're a bit on the high side for this example.

Did you try the FS section here on OF? I think I saw a couple of interesting pieces. Otherwise, just search ebay auctions. There's always a nice SM auction ending somewhere in the world.

I have to say that for my money, it looks nice and has a classic movement and if I was in the market I’d certainly go €500-600 which seems reasonable for a watch of this age type and condition.
Whenever you buy an old watch, you’ll want to wear it to see how it goes before sending it to your watch repairer of choice.
It’s always seemed to me that someone else’s choice of service and repairer is a little hit and miss.

@Spruce is right. I personally would not go higher for a watch like this because I always count in the costs of a service and I want to have the possibility to sell later without a loss. But that's probably because I'm cheap... :D So it all comes down, do you really like it, then stretch your budget up to EUR 500 or 600.

Thank you very much to you both!

It will be my first vintage watch so, after browsing through the offers available, I'm now thinking about going conservative and maybe buy from someone selling here. There is a vintage Seamaster from the 50's listed in the Private Sales section (2938-2SC) which really caught my eye and seems to be a much safer choice than something out of Catawiki...

What do you guys think, in terms of "economics"? I like them both so I guess I will have to decide based on objective reasoning.

If you’re buying it to wear that’s an entirely different transaction from buying it as an investment or to re-sell.

I’ve assumed this is a buy to wear for you and have given my view on that basis.

I’d also remind you that if you’re based in the EU, then the price you pay is just that. Remember that if you buy from outside the EU you’ll have to factor in an additional 20% duty.

500 + catawiki 9% + shipping + service you' ll be well above €700 if lucky to get a service in the lower segment of servicing pricing range... or well above €1000 according to some prices disclosed in this forum. Either is way too much IMO for this watch

Yes, I understood and thank you for your comments.

As I said, I like them both and, regardless of which one I end up choosing, I will be wearing them and probably never end up selling them.

The thing is, having that approach in mind, I also don't really want to sink money into a watch that, in order for me to wear it, will need further investment, and that was why I was thinking about going "safe" by buying from here.

I'm in Portugal and the sellers of both watches are in Belgium and Scandinavia, so I'm guessing the VAT will not be a problem.

    Hi Joao
If was you I would try and look at ebay and within europe so you won't pay import taxes!
Also always look to see if the seller accepts paypal as this is a piece of mind if you need to return your watch (you never know when things go wrong).

    Cumprimentos tugas
    Jose
