    Hi everyone,

This GMT is up for sale at a considerable discount (if legit) and I was wondering if you could help verify it from these not so great photos. If I were to purchase it would be in person so I could have a hands on look, but I need to travel an hour or two and wanted to see if I should go to the effort.

I have asked for some clearer photos but haven't heard much back from the seller

I compared it to other Swiss made dial variants I could find around the Web, and it looks 'ok' from my amateur eyes, and the bezel font also looks good, but would really appreciate some sage advice

    Thanks

Looks ok but the pictures are hard to say definitively. But then I’d also be a little hesitant if the seller can’t provide clearer pictures on an item that’s thousands of dollars.

He keeps saying that he will send some but none as of yet. I am supposed to meet up tomorrow, but if no clear pictures I don't know if I will be making the journey.

Going to sit and have another look at the dial now

I'd say it's worth the drive to look at it in the flesh.

Should i just make sure the serial and reference number both make sense (period wise?). I don't think I'm going to be able to get the back open when i meet the seller, as i don't have a rolex caseback opener, only a plastic ball thingy.

Ask to take a pic of his drivers license as part of sale and tell him you plan to have it authenticated ASAP. His reaction will tell you a lot. Otherwise looks promising to me.

What year does he claim thus is? Drilled lugs suggest earlier model which may make the dial a service replacement...

From what i can tell the seller doesn't know what he has, the listing was quite basic and i struggled to get any photo's from him. The band also looks as if it is an earlier code (Z = 1997) so it wouldn't surprise me.

If I am doing a face to face sale, i don't think having a photo of his drivers license would worry him too much?

Yes, check the serial number and try to get as much info from the seller as to how he acquired it, how long he's had it, etc. These GMTs are getting expensive and if you can get this at a discount as you said, then I would buy it. That's just me...you have to feel comfortable with the deal.

So I'm just on my way to inspect the watch, going to try to get the back off, but if the serial places it late 1990s and the reference engravings all look good I think I'm going to go for it. Anything else I should be focusing on when handling the watch in person?

Just the overall condition. Does the bezel rotate smoothly, how it feels when winding it, etc. Good luck. Looking forward to hearing how it went.

Ok so I got the watch, It is a 1996-7 serial with a service dial, as the dial glows but the hands do not. @morningtundra you were correct mate! The watch is in good condition, bevels present and the bracelet clasp number matches the year of watch. IMG_20171021_153346.jpg

Lovely example! Congratulations [emoji1417] ... if you were so inclined, you could probably pick up an original dial and have it swapped when you have it serviced.

I agree that you found a nice watch, and a period correct tritium dial will only set you back a few hundred dollars if you care to make it look original.
