Globemaster sales and China anti corruption 2015

Omega unveiled the Globemaster in 2015 with high hopes, but did not do as well as had intended. I've read comments online attributing the GM's lack of success various factors from it being too close to the Datejust to the unsuccessful advertising, or lack there of. I just read an article in the NY times that Omega had a tough year in sales due to the Chinese government cracking down on corruption... since China is Omega's largest market. This makes me wonder if the unveiling of the GM was unfortunately timed with a tough sales year in China, and that the GM promotion lost its momentum. I'm just speculating, but would be interested in anyone else's thoughts on this.

Could it be Omega's fault that the watch is just not very desirable?

Not competitive IMHO. Perhaps they valued the move to METAS more than the customer base. At least to me it was a big aesthetic let down compared to other options in the price neighborhood.

Perhaps the move to METAS was not as valued as Omega had hoped, idk. As far as aesthetics go, that’s pretty subjective. The GM is my favorite aesthetically out of all the Omegas, but sport watches do tend to be more desirable, at least in the west. Dressier Omegas do a lot better in the east and Middle East.

I have heard that before, that it does not sell well. What makes me wonder is that grey market discounts are not that large either. Best offer in my country is 28% off which is not a lot for non limited omega collection.
So there is some disconnect there.

I think China impacted a lot of sales. As for the Globemaster it might be a slow burn. It will take a while for the general market to understand METAS, a lot of people wear sports watches all the time (less dress watch sales maybe) and a lot of general buyers still don't know the brands history.....but it is on the right path to spread the word. I think a combination of the above had an impact. It is a lovely watch worthy of its history but I am biased :0)

Good point about the grey market effect.

It’s the epitome of understated elegance and something of a departure from Omega’s more sporty offerings. On a technical level, the METAS certified 8900 is also on the cutting edge of Omega’s lineup. To my eye, it’s nothing like the Datejust, which I find to be a bit gaudy - and I loathe the cyclops on that thing.

Looks too much like a datejust to me. But I’m sure it’s a great watch.

To me it doesn’t look like a Datejust. The only points of comparison between the DJ and the GM are the bezel and date window, both of which differ in person. The GM has a fine coin edge and the date window at 6 makes the watch symmetrical. This is a far cry from the DJ blingy flitted bezel and cyclops date window. Omega has used the coin edge bezel on their older constilation models.

I personally feel that the GM is a slow starter, but will gain more appeal as time goes on. I frequent instagram tags with the GM and there is plenty of love for the watch.

Or, like the offspring of a wild night between a Datejust and a Constellation.
