Is there a formal definition of a gilt dial? I know there's gold gilt and silver gilt but are there other types of gilting? I guess my question is does gilt refer to the process (technique) or to the materials used or both?
I found this thread. Hope it helps. http://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.php?178974-What-is-a-gilt-dial-exactly
Let me try ... Gilt = Application of gold to an object. However in the Rolex world it means as I understand it reverse black print on a brass dial plate. (So the brass letters show through the black dial.
Some gilt in these threads: https://omegaforums.net/threads/gilt-dial-omegas.45730/ https://omegaforums.net/threads/redial.7224/ http://www.network54.com/Forum/207593/message/1376592781/What+is+Gilt- https://omegaforums.net/threads/vin...-steel-is-this-a-gilt-dial.20098/#post-218025
Looks like gold paint over black paint. A pretty bad refinish. On the example below we can see how the black top layer has begun to deteriorate with the gold under layer showing through.
Could this deterioration have been caused by the radium in the hands? Just asking because of the location on the dial.
Reviving an old thread for a simple question. Is there such thing as a Gilt dial with a texture to it? If so, how can they reverse print that? Excuse my gilt ignorance!
