I currently have 2 Speedmasters. One is a ref 3753.50 and the other a 3592.50. I'm interested in getting an older chronograph and have had my eye on the 2 and 3 register Seamasters.

I'm leaning towards the 321, mostly for aesthetic purposes but also because of the movement's use in the older Speedmasters. What are your thoughts on the 320 vs. 321?

Other than the overall history of the Speedmaster, is there a reason why the Seamaster 321 is a fair bit less in price to acquire than the Speedmaster given that the movements are similar or perhaps identical?

The Speedmaster and it's history/popularity is the main reason for the gulf in value.

It's also worth pointing out that the 321 Seamasters are smaller than the Speedys, so some people find them slightly too small.

I can't say much about the 320 versions but the 321 Seamaster chronos are lovely watches. They might be small measured by today's standards but after a few moments on the wrist I tend to not recognize the smaller size anymore.
    Happy hunting!

Although the 321 movement is common to both, the smaller dial and hands, plus lack of a bezel, cause the Seamaster to be 6mm narrower in diameter (41mm vs 35mm I believe). In addition, as the Seamaster often has a tachymetre scale on the dial, it's face can appear more cluttered.

And the Seamaster never went to Space.

Beautiful looking piece, my humble 320 in comparison.

The dial isn't perfect, but I absolutely love the detailed coffin markers on my 2278-3 Cal 320, and the golden hue it exhibits in the sunlight :)

Cal320s are nice and the lack of an hours register means the creep issue 321s can have doesn't apply but a lot of the 320s are square pusher cases like those above and not only have zero water resistance but aren't even dustproof. This makes them hard to wear often in humid or wet countries.

The round pusher Seamasters can at least be made somewhat water resistant with fresh seals.

I'm a Connie devotee so the size of course doesn't bother me but I love my pink 320
Because of the problems pointed out by @dsio I wear it only occasionally - makes it all the more special when I do strap it on though

Ah the twin of mine, yea I'm considering wearing it for my sister's wedding but in general its just not a watch compatible with Brisbane / Gold Coast / Singapore or any places like that with humidity and frequent rain. If you're living in a nordic country or part of the US that doesn't see much rain and moisture you're sweet and they're a beautiful watch but they corrode internally if they see too much exposure.

BTW size wise these don't wear small, they're more like 35.5mm diameter and the pushers and smooth bezel make them feel like a much larger watch. Its bigger than a Datejust on the wrist and feels comparable to a Daytona even though the Daytona is a 39mm.

Can I ask a noob q... Do the 321's that go on seamasters fit in speedy cases? Are they the exact same size? And are 321 movements worth less if they belonged to a seamaster?

Yes, and yes although there are some subtle differences like the inner pusher pieces which are different and need to be changed over. My 105.012-63 has a Seamaster movement and for that reason will never be worth original Speedmaster money. It means if an extract is pulled it'll come back not matching what the watch currently is which reduces its value to the sum of the parts.

I remember yours as it was the only decent example to look at when I thinking about bidding on mine

These beautiful watches seem to be relatively few and far between and don't get anywhere near the exposure they deserve.
    So pictures please!

If omega didn't have an extract service maybe it wouldn't make a difference then? Just would need to match year to serial and you're good.
