NASA reports the passing of astronaut Gene Cernan https://twitter.com/NASA/status/821082534821892098 Really saddened by this. If you have the chance, watch The Last Man on the Moon. (Netflix streaming in USA, maybe elsewhere too.)
Terrible to hear we've lost the last man on the moon. I've still not yet seen the documentary film he did in 2014 but I'll see if I can track it down as I've heard really positive things and wanted to learn more about him.
http://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/nation/2017/01/16/cernan-obit/96643844/ edited to change link from Houston Chronicle to Detroit News - a much better, and much more complete story of both Captain Cernan's life, and his spaceflight career including Apollo and Gemini missions.
Incidentally, I took my cousin yesterday to the National Air & Space Museum and was wondering myself how many of the former Apollo astronauts were still with us.... the Moon Exploration section of the museum is one of my favorite sections and it never ceases to amaze me this great achievement by NASA... RIP USN Captain Cernan ...
The next planned manned moon mission (flyby not landing) is Orion SLS-2 EM-2 in August 2021, I really hope we still have some of the originals remaining when we finally add to that number for the first time in over 50 years.
Very sad. Gene was pure class, and probably the most well liked and respected of all the Mercury/Gemini/Apollo heroes. He was also a big supporter of Omega. Sent from my SM-G920T using Tapatalk
Here's a fairly recent shot (2014) of Cernan at an Omega-sponsored museum opening in Milan, Italy image © OMEGA Ltd
Gene Cernan was very appreciative of his Omega Speedmasters, and spoke highly of them in interviews he gave where he discussed his Omegas. His Apollo 17 Speedmaster is at the Smithsonian, and while not on exhibition at this time, can be seen at the NASM website: https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-objects/chronograph-cernan-apollo-17
Very sad news. Disappointing to only find this out on here and not seen or heard anything on the TV/Radio news here in Australia this morning. It was only earlier this month that I enjoyed seeing @darty 's post https://omegaforums.net/threads/apollo-astronauts-meeting-a-moon-walker.51138/#post-617861 about meeting Gene and Tom Stafford. I thought Gene looked in good spirits. He had been scheduled to come down to Australia last year, I think it was to present the film talked about above, but I think it got cancelled due to ill health. Gene always seemed very enthusiastic with the general public; space and Omega fans alike. I believe that he was one of the few astronauts that would still sign his book for free if you mailed it to him, and from what I have read he took the time to read request letters and made some very thoughtful comments and inscriptions that were very gratefully received. RIP
The first and last are gone. Our Space Heroes are leaving this earth, but their footprints have been permanently left behind in America's history and the moon.
May he RIP. Prior to finding out about the news, I was watching "The moon shot" documentary with him in it, it was sad finding out right after that that he's no longer with us..
