So leaving the provenance and history aside, as a piece of utilitarian design, what I love about the original (and most of the many iterations of the original that stay close to the original) is it's a wonderful exercise in form following function, the modernist monochrome dials and hand set are incredibly legible with perfect proportions and really beautifully and elegantly balanced.

The quality, quantity, and application of dial lume are about as good as It gets, the whole piece is a brilliantly considered example of understated modernist (mid-century) utilitarian design with really strong influences of Bauhaus and Ulm Schools.

The bejeweled, vajazzled, and violently garish iterations are the antithesis of the kind of design philosophy that I adore, as they start to lose these key components they become little more than blingy decorative or (potential) investment pieces.

That's my two penneth worth anyway😉

This feels like it brings up a lot of interesting questions about watch collecting. We signal a lot about ourselves through what we dislike and perceive as being in 'bad taste'.

I think you bring up a few interesting reasons for dislike. But, I'd also add that I feel like there's an aspect of men being uncomfortable wearing jewelry. To my mind, for everything I enjoy about mechanical watches, at this time in history, they're basically fashion accessories for most people. So, I find it a bit odd that many of us collectors are basically saying "I love m̵e̵n̵'̵s̵ ̵j̵e̵w̵e̵l̵r̵y̵ watches, but I really don't like them when they look too decorative."

I'm probably being a bit too reductive, as there are other reasons people may not prefer iced-out watches - they signal wealth too strongly, they deviate from the utilitarian history of watches, etc. But, I do think it's interesting that these types of models are usually marketed to women and celebrities, and we normal guys with disposable income feel like they're not for us.

But, at the end of the day - everyone should just enjoy what they enjoy. For the record, I think that the blue speedy that was shared is kinda cool. I'm not sure that I could pull it off myself, though.

Honestly I can’t pull it off but the days I wear it, anniversary dinner etc I just don’t care.

Have been seeing these off catalogue items appearing on instagram, my question is purely out of interest, what is the retail and how much are you expected to have spent to ask for one of these?

Thanks

So to answer your question, about 150k USD. I haven’t actually spent that much with Omega but I’m in their good books. Main reason is back in 2017 when a big business deal got finalised for me I thanked the founders / directors (two watches) of my then company with gold omegas. These weren’t hot models or anything, straight out purchased as gifts. This put me in a category with the boutique where I can politely ask for watches that I like.

I have two devilles (his and hers) but they weren’t from this boutique but they knew about them as I take it in for servicing.

Thanks for answering the question, you didn't need to come on here and do that so it's really appreciated. Very nice chrono collection I have to say. I'm pleased to see we share a watch in common... The Tissot PRS!

Thanks for joining in @YandB and congratulations on what I really believe to be an absolutely amazing piece in real life! Your contribution really helps this thread forward, even beyond what I was hoping to achieve with my comment if last Wednesday.

Now that we’ve established that these pieces aren’t just really existing, but even somewhat “attainable” through an Omega Boutique, I’m curious to learn how a prospective buyer could even get to know about the possibility’s existence.

Would you mind sharing more?

As a Speedmaster enthusiast living in a country without any OB, I’m trying to figure out how to stay informed. These forums are great for that, still these particular watches went largely unnoticed. For the record, knowledge of these particular Speedies is only going to be of practical use to me if I’d win a lottery. 😁

From my experience, it's not too dissimilar to the high-end contemporary fine art market, and high-performance ultra-luxury car market;
I don't know if you know anything about these markets, but essentially it's all about establishing a relationship with the dealer and with the artist etc. You would likely have purchased a number of pieces that were more readily available, or bought into an artists work early on, analogous to the lower runs of a ladder, but you work your way up.. Unless that is, you have an in, which is basically a massive shortcut, for example, you're very well known and it's hugely advantageous for the brand to be associated with you. Or it's well known that you have a very important contemporary art collection, but you've never purchased anything of this artist or from this gallery before however the gallery and artists would likely see it as being incredibly noteworthy and potentially prestigious to be part of your collection etc.. etc..

Blow Up hit the nail on the head.

for me the way I found out about it was a watch collecting friend of mine is so high up in omega that he got invited to the LA launch event. After he told me about it and I saw the watches on a random instagram post I had to go in to the boutique and specifically ask about it and explain why I wanted the sapphire one in particular. They didn’t make any promises but called about six months later to my surprise and delight.

What was really nice of them is that they delivered 3 weeks before the 1 July price rise. They could have easily held on to it for 3 weeks if they felt like it and charged another 8% on it…

Hey Everyone,

I’m the owner of the sapphire piece. Definitely real off catalogue. Ready this thread I’m glad I did not post here as a standalone post… the hate for it is a bit confusing. Does it look that bad? For me it’s one of the more tasteful ones on the market…

To each their own, but I think the sapphire one is gorgeous. Probably my favorite gem set bezel on a sports watch in the entire market. Enjoy 👍

I've seen the rainbow version in person. Supposed to be the first one in the US. I was quite impressed. I thought it would be gaudy, but I was wrong. It is quite cool. Price tag showed $146K... before the price hikes.

Serious wealth is…serious. My former B-in-L married a dot.com divorcee. She’s worth multiple billions. I can’t fathom that kind of money, but it would be nice for a sense of lifetime security. Alas, I have my 401k. 😉

I’d like a woman like that…….she could keep me in a lifestyle in which I’d like to be accustomed

It honestly doesn't actually look bad - it's covered in expensive gems done in probably one of the most subtle ways they could have. It would probably look even better with black or clear gems like diamonds instead of the blue.

It's a lot better than the absolute eye-sore gem covered Rolex's that someone posted on page 2 of this OF thread.

I’ve actually used the tach, but I doubt that I could find use for sparkly shit!
