Gallet Chronograph - thoughts on value?

    Hello,

I recently picked up this Gallet chronograph from a local seller. The seller had mentioned that the watch was recently serviced but the chrono function doesn't work as expected. When I start the chronograph, the 45 minute register moves 1 minute, and then another two minutes every time the second hand goes past the 57 second marker. Clearly, it still needs to be serviced but I don't know of a good watchmaker nearby.

The seller is open to taking the watch back and refund me the $ if I so choose. And while I am contemplating that decision, I thought - maybe I can keep the watch if I got it for a good price and service it at a later date. I don't necessarily want to disclose how much I paid, but would appreciate it if those who are better versed with these watches can give their opinion on what this watch is worth in it's present condition.

Now I know I should've probably been a bit more informed before I made the purchase to begin with but let's just say I've been thinking about a Gallet for a while and couldn't resist picking this up when it popped up around the corner.

Thanks for any input you may have:)

Here are some pictures for reference.

I'd be strongly inclined to return it, and wait for another. Not because the movement is a great concern, but rather because it appears to have a chrome top, and a full steel case would be vastly superior.

Were these ever available in SS cases? I've only ever seen these as chrome plated.

Yes, some Gallet chronos were made in full steel. Here are some quick examples:

    Thanks!

I was aware that many of the Gallet chronographs were available in SS, but specifically was referring to the model I've purchased. I don't believe this one came in a SS case. I'm not totally opposed to the chrome plated casing though.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on what this Gallet is valued in the current market knowing it needs a service?

Well, I was offered a very clean and in working condition stainless steel Gallet 2-register chronograph this past weekend for $600. Too high (or maybe I am too cheap or out of touch with vintage watches!!!) in my opinion so I didn't bother to make a counter offer. If it was something like $500 then I would start at $350 and go from there.

    Hope this helps....

Galletworld.com is a flawed but good place to get a sense of the range and valuations of their collectible watches. All the watches listed are SS or gold cases so I'd not bother with this one and return it. There are also threads here on OF that are useful. I own a later Jim Clark that I wear a lot. Gallet is not well documented so you need to do your research. Well worth snagging a SS cased model.
