This relates to the recent announcement of the Artemis program where NASA is intending to land on the moon in 2024.
With Artemis being the twin sister of Apollo.

I wonder what watches this new wave of pioneers will be wearing upon their return to the moon as certified by NASA?

Perhaps it will be the new Co-axial Speedy Pro?
If so, then is it possible the upcoming 50th aniversary SS speedy will already have certification upon it's iminent release?
Just as part of the surprise package.
It may even include a certificate to that effect?

What are your thoughts?

Just a little something to discuss other than the 50th anniversary edition itself.

Unfortunately, a smart watch. Watched it happen in diving with the dive computer.

Agreed. There could be a potential for a mechanical watch to go back to space, and it would be exciting to see. Perhaps we will see it with SpaceX or Blue Origins...NASA still has a ways to go......

Yeah, we know a lot more about space and space travel, the old 'it must be a manual watch' is long past. The Speedmaster as the must have tool watch of the space program is long gone, unfortunately.

I'm tempted to get a Z33 because they're so ridiculously futuristic and retro at the same time.

I understand some divers still bring a mechanical dive watch in case the computer fails.

For space travel, i doubt if the same thing applies. If the computer fails, the astronauts would be screwed.

Even during Apollo the value of flown items was starting to be realised (Apollo 15 scandal etc). The watch brands are also much more savvy about the value of endorsements and association with technical achievements. Thanks to YouTube, Facebook and Twitter etc most of the public are now budding multi-media marketing experts - more so for people in the public eye. Sadly in terms of both personal and institutional equipment selection I think the waters will be very muddy and it will be hard to read between the lines compared to the old NASA missions (even more so for SpaceX and Blue Origin). If I was flying I would take a mechanical Speedy in my preference kit for good luck if nothing else - it worked for Gene Cernan :0)

Does anybody have a clear link to a mission statement for NASA Artemis and how does it link in with the Blue Origin Moon lander etc? It all looks a bit vage in terms of a mission directive and outcomes....

"The United States must remain first in space, in this century as in the last, not just to propel our economy and secure our nation, but above all because the rules and values of space, like every great frontier, will be written by those who have the courage to get there first and the commitment to stay. Last year, NASA and American innovators began designing the precursor to outposts on the Moon and the mission to Mars, the Lunar GatewayThe United States must remain first in space in this century as in the last, not just to propel our economy and secure our nation, but above all, because the rules and values of space, like every great frontier, will be written by those who have the courage to get there first and the commitment to stay," The US vice president Mike Pence ……?????

and the small print...….To achieve the 2024 goal, NASA intends to scale back its plans for a crew-tended, multi-module Gateway to include only the basic parts needed to support an initial landing. Support for a long-term, sustainable lunar presence, as had been NASA's priority, has been deferred to 2028...

How does / does this link in with Mars.... looks to be kicking cans down the beach?

Probably a G-shock or something similar. With the technology nowadays you can pretty much incorporate a back-up basic computer into a watch if you really need it...

Maybe some folks will take an original Speedie with them just for the historic side. I know I would.

But look at the space program in the last decades, most of the watches were personnal ones and you saw a lot of different brands and models...

Another factor that one has to remember here is that traditions in these circles are strong and deep, a speedmaster may very well continue to be the astronaut watch simply because it’s tradition, and there’s really no argument against it
