Four Watches That Helped Me Downsize…

I’m curious to know if and why you are reducing your numbers. In my case, it’s because of four watches.

Two are new… And two are old… The two new(er) ones I got in the last year or so. And the two old ones were so well serviced that I feel I can wear them without much concern. (Thanks to Ashton at Precision Horology for the Seamaster and to @Canuck for the Rolex Sky-Rocket.)

I wear one of these four watches most of the time, for a variety of activities.

Some of the ones that are now gone for good (sold, traded, given away).

I miss some of them but not that much. It feels good to have downsized, and now with a focus on only 1 or 2 more from a couple OF members, I patiently wait until I am ready… Note: Not my guns…they were tools of my trade…

Bulova Milships. Bulova have a few of their new watches that look nice.

I am not an expert on movements, but the automatic movement in mine works just fine. I tried to get one of the Swiss made movements but my jeweller could not find one.

The Bulova is relatively inexpensive but much nicer in person. I am surprised to see them offered at a discount.

A nice quartet! If wearing is the primary goal, four nice, disparate watches seems like a good rotation.

Working through that process as well.

You're better at selling than I am. In answer to your question, these two had a similar impact. They are in the mail now coming back from service.

There was something about the simple design combined with the solid movements that triggered a reaction in my brain. Not sure I’ll get to four but definitely feel content.

If I could get down to 40 I would be happy, but that just makes my soul hurt thinking about that.

40? Surely sir you jest. With that number you would have to start collecting all over again!

The man who dies with the most watches wins 😁

I might be able to squeeze mine down to 100 but then I would feel that something is missing.

I am almost a reformed watch collector now as I haven't bought one single watch so far in October but that may well be because my last watch bought was a Datona and now I have no spare cash ::facepalm1:: wallet shock is a terrible thing.

I did a big purge last year and am really trying to psych myself up for another (my drawers hold 70 watches and I am spilling out on the dresser and have another dozen in various states of disrepair). But I will stare into the drawers for several minutes thinking about what can go.
I always seem to find a reason why I can’t sell one or another- this is part of a sub-collection of this kind, or I couldn’t find another like this ever again (which is bullshit- there is a never ending stream of watches), or I wouldn’t get much for this so might as well keep it. Ugh- this is painful.

Despite my best efforts to keep the size of my collection in check, it continues to grow. Rather than trying to impose a moratorium on new acquisitions - which I know would be an abysmal failure - I’m focusing on slowing the rate of acquisition to a glacial pace.

One methodology I have employed this last year is to focus in on certain letters of the alphabet, in my case E's and R's so I pretty much am only collecting Eterna-matics, Enicars and Roamers but of course there is a special dispensation for the letter C ie Chronographs. 😁
It really has slowed down the rate of acquisition.

Of course the letter T is acceptable for timepiece and W for watch…I’m liking this method!

I love both the heavily armed @Duracuir1 fine leather goods and JW’s bulova. That’s such a nice looking model and the dome is killer. Just like a nice solid watch not flashy yet very easy to appreciate. I’m not thinking of cutting back at the moment I’m getting ready to let her rip a bit (within reason like maybe a timex and a tommy hilfigger, I’m going all fashion. Wow that would be weird.

I gotta stop making statements like that cause I swear I got some kind of jinx whenever I think I can pick up something nice a pet gets sick, I’ll need a dental implant, some idiot with no insurance decides to smash my car. So just ignore I said anything I ain’t getting nothin like ever.

if and why you are reducing your numbers.

I bought some watches I regret, projects that I won't get to or examples that don't excite.

My time seems shorter on a daily basis as well as the big picture, there is so much to do and not getting any younger.

Not complaining, just realizing that excess baggage needs to be offloaded.... (mainly from my waist!) and more time allocated to that which we most love.

I still lust after a few and could well buy more watches but damn, I have so much stuff!

I haven't really ever sold a watch (returned one to a friend that had grown to regret selling) but the day will come....

I think 4 will be my final number, a sport and a dress on the wrists and a piece of art and of history in each hand.

4 is a good number, Steve, I'm rather excited about it!

After buying my Ranchero earlier this year, I decided that it was going to be my last acquisition for 2022. Last weekend I met a good friend and fellow OF member for an impromptu dinner at which he offered to sell me this:
I took the watch home the same night and sent him the $ the next day. As I have no willpower nor spine, will someone please buy my incredibly nice ‘71 Speedmaster that I have listed in the private watch sales forum? I really need to be a seller for a change. 😲😲😲

Fine, you guys already have it rough- like dentist or police officer…nobody calls you when everything is just peachy.

Somebody buy Greg’s pretty step-dialed Speedmaster, he has a watch problem.
