Disney and Damian Hirst drove the spike. And not surprised. Normal LE Swatches don’t spike like that. The non LE mirror will drop fast. Plus you have to admit it looks great.
Crap, trial balloon. Look for the upcoming LE Speedmaster Professional with a character of Micky Mouse in one of the sub dials.
I remember a talk made by a long time vintage watch dealer and he mentioned that Swatches are more or less a piece of 'art' and are designed to be collectible through marketing/limited releases/hype. After that, I found a modern watch catalogue from the mid 90s and it talked about the auction results for some rare Swatches - it may have mentioned $40k USD for one with art featuring Picasso. If people are saying that it is only happening now with LE Speedies and now Swatch, think of those who cashed in 20 years ago.
I was thinking of getting one for my daughter as well, but since I missed it, oh well, I guess regular Swatch watch is fine as well. But I have to admit it looks nice though..
Hope no one jumped the gun and bought the larger “mirror” spot watches on eBay - these are now back in stock (or were a few minutes ago) on the Swatch UK and EU sites - I just bought two at £84 each for Christmas presents for my nephews...
My cousin spent a fortune during the Swatch craze back in the late 80s early 90s. Even flew to Italy to stand in line to get one of the first chronos. Today those same watches are selling on ebay for $40 to $50. There's a few hold outs still asking hundreds for "scarce" Swatches, but it's a bit of a circle jerk with collectors buying from each other.
No worries... there is no pain involved in owning the Best Limited Edition Speedmaster Ever. And for those without one, well, you have my sympathies.
Swatch watches have never really done anything for me, even the first time around, however I did find myself looking at them in the airport the other day for a bit of a beater. I actually bought my best mate one for his birthday when inwas thete.
