Hi all, Does the First Omega in Space have a stepped dial? If not, what exactly is a “stepped” dial? The periphery of the FOIS dial doesn’t look flat to me.
Thanks, Mike

It is slightly angled at the periphery but no it is not a stepped dial. Here are pics of 2 similar looking straight lug Speedmasters. The first is a 1960s Ed White, the second a current FOIS. It is tricky to see but there is a definite step stamped into the EW which is not present on the FOIS (or Pro model from ~1974 to 2020). The new reissued Ed White, or more correctly named 321 Speedmaster has a step as does the newly introduced Pro model. Several other models have had stepped dials over the years too.

A modern Speedy , ST2 Ultraman has a brass stepped dial, that is pretty to look at.

Thanks for this very useful clarification.

The FOIS does seem to pull off the neat trick of a dial that has more apparent depth and dimensionality than I expected from the pix I'd seen, appearing almost as a pie-pan at certain angles and lighting conditions. Big part of its charm for me, vs the Speedy Pro I had before it.

That ST 2 is pretty fantastic, Would love to have been in on those.
