I’ve always been fascinated by display casebacks. It was a shame the watch that I open for, the FOIS, did not come with one. Last year I learnt there are a handful of dealers out there that either manufactures or sources display caseback for luxury watches, Preik for example. I got lucky and managed to source a display case back for my vintage Seamaster from Japan and since then my went on the hunt for a caseback for my FOIS With the help of a few amazing people on this forum, I was able to find a caseback for FOIS, and the package arrived this morning! The only minor concern I have with the mod is the removal of the anti magnetic plate, which I assume may make my FOIS more prone to magnetic interferences..but well worth it I’d say!
Very nice - both watches are quite attractive. I would be more inclined to worry about water resistance. Have you done a pressue test? I think the dust cover is just that - a dust cover. Omega does not mention anti-magnetic as a spec or feature for this watch. I know the cover says "anti-magnetic iron" but does is it actually intended to protect the movement from magnetism? https://www.omegawatches.com/media/pdf/watches/product-sheet/us/en-us/31132403001001-en-us.pdf
That looks good! Did the display caseback came with a special movement ring? Just asking because, as fas as I know, the dust cover holds down the movement ring when the casebook gets screwed back again. So the dust cover has 'more to do' than just keeping dust away and maybe some anti-magnetic features.
Congrats on the mod! Looking great. Also a big fan of your leather strap setup for the vintage Seamaster. The Preik display backs do come with a separate movement "spacer" ring, as zoonhannover mentioned. Although from the photos, it looks like yours is from a different manufacturer? Here's a Preik one on my standard Speedy Pro. Plus the purchase invoice, calling out that spacer ring.
The title of this topic made me wonder where Walter Schirra's personal Omega Speedmaster CK2998, worn during MA-8 Sigma-7 in October 1962 resides these days ... private collection or stayed in the family ? Anyway we already knew that Wally Schirra wore his chronograph during water egress training and this week we also learned that Wally Schirra probably took it for a dive in his private pool to test some SCUBA equipment... I ordered from Ccedar via eBay, and yes it came with a separate o-ring to hold down the movement. I don’t like Preik’s version due to its smooth curve finish. Ccedar’s case is stepped, much like the original FOIS.
Omega did produce the Speedmaster with a sapphire back, and no movement cover. My 1980 Speedmaster with sapphire back, acquired in 1991.
... There're about half-a-dozen Speedmaster models with open display caseback... ... there's the " 2007 chocolate ", the " 2002 First & Only " , the 1998 " Rhodium ", the 1990 unnumbered Apollo XI, the 1994 " 25 years Apollo XI ", the 1985 " 20 years Flight-qualified ", etc... missing still a few... All the commemorative stuff ws on the back, rather than a " Buzz Butt " subdial... what were they thinking at Omega ?
