Flightmaster MK1 Glass????

Hi, I have just bought a Flightmaster Mk 1 and am obviously thrilled with it, however there appears to be a black circle around the circumference of the glass, and it appears to be hand applied under the glass and it looks very odd, but I have seen other MK!'s with the same black ring. From straight on it partly obscures part of the numbers on the internal bezel. Is this normal for this model (045.013) Sorry for the poor photo but my main phone is broken.

Not an easy picture to see but it could easily be someone has hand applied a black circumference to the inside of the crystal - why I've no idea but alternatively there is a gasket around the outside of the crystal and its not uncommon for this to age and become a sticky goo. Maybe this is what you are seeing is this black goo under the crystal?

Hmm, that's interesting, yes it is under the crystal and that's why it puzzles me. The owner (who bought it brand new in 1970) has never had it taken apart for any reason, I'll post a better pic tomorrow, many thanks!

Archer, you are correct. The seal had perished and hence the mess. A NOS bezel is on the way as the old one couldn't be saved, some numbers came off along with the old rubber when cleaned.
