First Rolex; Mistake? (Updated)

I've been an Omega guy since I first changed from collecting pocket watches to wrist watches and have always avoided Rolex for multiple reasons, mostly social. I've tried dragging my wife on my Omega Path but she likes her life-style brands and was always keen on having a Rolex one day. She owns a business with a nautical name, and she is a classy-sporty woman, so I decided a 35mm Yacht-Master was going to be the right watch. After a lot of careful research and shopping I settled on this one which I just received and will give her next month.

Looks good, right? Here is the issue.....

I really like it! I didnt want to, I wanted to give it a once over, decide it is a nice watch but an over-hyped brand, but man is it an impressive watch. Great build, great look, good weight and boy is the feel on the wrist good. I think I should have never done this as it is going to trigger a few more purchases on my side and I didnt want to join the waitlist!!! Darn you Rolex, you build a really nice watch! 😎

Buying a Rolex is never a mistake as long as you buy wisely.

Darn that does look really nice at 35mm. I can definitely see the attraction. Now at 35mm is that sold as like unisex/midsize? That’s not sold as a ladies watch is it? Wearing so much vintage 35mm rarely looks odd to me.

+1 for YM

This and SeaDweller never receive as much love as GMT and Sub.

I always “nice watch” a fellow YM.
Update us with a photo on her wrist too. It’s a stunner. Congrats.

I believe the bezel on that model of Yacht Master is platinum?

Yup, 35mm is the mid-size/unisex version, original came in 29mm, 35mm and 40mm sizes.

And yes, bezel and dial are platinum which is a big plus for her and why I went w/this previous version instead of the newest which has a slate dial. Plus red vs blue accents on older/newer and she is a red gal.

Not my (vintage) style, but I like the red accents, and have no doubt that she'll love it!

The Yacht master is a perfect choice. I'm gonna get some hate for this but I prefer Rolex over Omega.

Buy what you like this is the best investment. I don’t think it’s the watch, it’s your feeling toward the watch.

Rolex makes great watches, it's just that people have gotten all twisted around on price and availability. Almost every Rolex model is available, just not at the price Rolex advertises. So you either accept it or are bitter about it.

I bought my wife her first Rolex back in 1977 because she liked the brand and image, she wore it for decades until I bought her a 31mm Datejust with MOP dial in 2007. Sold the old DJ for more than I paid for it. So she's worn Rolex almost exclusively for 44 years. She has a couple of Breguets and a JLC engraved Reverso but she prefers the Rolex. I just sent her Rolex in for its first overhaul in 14 years. Buy and wear what you like.

Offer her a Patek next time and let us know again what you think 😎

Why would that change the fact that Rolex makes a nice watch?

I made a similar mistake. First i got 35mm for my wife. She said too big for her. So got 29mm and she is happy.

But I like that YM so I started wearing that 35mm. My wrist is small, usually prefer 34 -36 mm sizes. However that YM 35mm feels smaller on my wrist. Ended up having a 40mm for me.

So now we got 29, 35 and 40 mm YM among me and my wife. Keeping all of those.

Photos later.

Rolex makes very nice (above nice, actually) watches. Never said the opposite.

Mrs.71 has a 35mm two tone YM with blue dial which she never takes off whilst her steel 35mm SM languishes in a drawer somewhere, I'd say you made the right choice,

Yeah, took me about 5yrs of marriage to figure that one out; buy what she wants not what I want her to want ... if that makes sense.

took me about 9 years of marriage to figure that out, only ym and dj alternated wrist time on her
I had her ( lady size) ap, vc, piaget, cellini never get deployed- reason not liking manual winds
let alone iwc, omega, zenith, cartier, breitling all in drawer, although they are auto

That's how it starts, " have always avoided Rolex for multiple reasons." Then you finally get one, and then it keeps pulling you in. Hope she enjoys the watch.

Wow. A very thoughtful and generous gift. If she doesn't love it, she doesn't deserve you... and you get to wear it!

If they did these with a satin-brushed finish I'd definitely buy one. That high polish puts it in a different category for me.
