No, for the dog-leg cases, it should be 14900 or 167.005.

The 551 should have a 167.005 case back - not a major show stopper for an every day wearer, but if you can use it as a reason to return the watch, I would do so.

If it doesnt bother you, keep the watch and wear it, but you might find the redial, over polishing and wrong case back niggle away at you.

I bought something similar (worse) for my first pie pan and sent it back and did my research before parting with my cash again (several hours looking at Desmonds PDF's)

Also, if you try and sell the watch, you would now need to do so, with the knowledge that it has a few things wrong with it.

I saw the watch on ebay and the seller never mentioned the incorrect case back or redial, and maybe didnt know, but sometimes sellers choose to only tell you the bits they want you to know.

If bought from eBay, there should be no problem returning it. I see no good reason to keep a watch with multiple major problems like this, especially for a first watch/purchase. I'm sure you'd rather have something to be proud of, not a problem you'd have to wear or deal with for a long time.

Is it possible to return though if the seller has not claimed it to be original in their item description?

It's advertised as a168.005, so just tell the seller that the watch is not a true 168.005, but with wrong major parts from different models. He's got a good feedback history and the auction just ended so I think he'd have no problem cancel it.

PS: From the listing: "This is the rarer model without the date window." This sounds quite familiar, just like the "prototype Speedmaster Jedi" dial. The seller knows it.

Good advice. You could also show him the database extract which shows it should have a date calibre in order to back up your concern. Good luck.

image.jpg image.jpg Received the wach today. There also appears to be some discolouration to one of the lugs (top left) so i'll be contacting the seller definitely. What would this have been caused by out of interest?

P.s sorry for the poor quality of my pictures

Could be anything from a repair of the lug to replacement. Also, the case has been polished way too much.

Not a good example for a first watch.

Contacted the seller over the weekend who claimed he was unaware of the damage to the lug and the wrong case back. However, he was understanding about this and offered me a refund so I have returned the watch this morning.

Thanks alot for your feedback everybody

:) now you've sent it back, I withdraw my earlier positive message. The watch was a dog, it would have eaten away at you, but I didn't want to pile on your misery. Good outcome...
