This came up in my eBay feed, and I got to thinking about how much value this seller lost because he decided to do a little DIY work on his 105.012-65. It is languishing at an asking price of $7,500. He says that the paint had worn off the sweep hand so he touched it up. https://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-OM...202302863857?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
I don't think it's the second hand that keeps people away. The dial isn't very nice, imho, based on the pics . I bet it looks better in the sun, but in these it just looks worn out.
That's an interesting point. I did realize that the watch wasn't very appealing overall, but I think you put a good perspective on it. I suppose one could ask for photos taken in sunshine. I will ask the seller for those, since he has re-listed. However, one would still have to deal with the sweep hand. Could it be restored, because it's hideous. Maybe there's a way to strip the paint (or "Wite Out"). Or would it involve a search for a replacement?
Could just be that it's not in the least bit attractive, and $7k... When greed, blind optimism, and actual blindness collide.
Agreed. Not really attractive in the slightest, although the case looks quite good. Pretty much the definition of a 'running' watch.
First, do no harm......Don't 'Fakk about' with your 105.012-65! Take it to Simon Freese or Swiss Time Services. Your 105.012-65 comes back looking like this:
Well, the seller was very responsive in sending photos taken in better light. Unfortunately, the dial still doesn't look great IMO; very blotchy and strange. Unfortunate, because the case does look pretty nice.
That is a pretty rough looking example. But it is still better than what I have in that model, which is nothing! I love this forum. Great advice and input from years of experience.
It's a little roughed up, but a trip to Simon Freese for a lume touch-up might turn out a decent, lived-in example. The bezel probably doesn't look that bad in person. It all comes down to price, really - the ask is too high but I think it could make a good wearer if you spent $6k on it (including the trip to Freese)
Ahhh.... there it is again @oddboy! A watch that has aged beautifully in every way. Perfect on leather. One of my favourites on the forum.
You're too kind @nonuffinkbloke! It's one of my favourites too! The strap is from a member here, but I heard he's not making them anymore. :/
You make a very valid point mate! I have only got one Speedmaster and I forget they are supposed to be black.
