Hey guys, I bought an Omega Seamaster yesterday and I thought now was a perfect time to finally join this forum. Hopefully this is my first of many :)

Anyways, I thought I'd upload a few photos and see what you guys think. I purchased it off the granddaughter of a man who died recently (he was around 95 years old).
As always when I buy something second hand, I ask about the story behind it; it turns out the owner was an ANZAC in Papua New Guinea, and he travelled the world with this beautiful watch! It has many stories.

Anyways, I'm not too good with the technical specs of the watch, but it looks to be around a 50s model and probably needs a good cleanup and a service, but it is running strong. The band looks to be 18mm, but it's most likely not the original band because of its tissot-ness if I may.

Hope you guys enjoy it, and if you can provide any information at all about it I'd be absolutely delighted!

    Congrats!

BTW, it's a Seamaster, not a Speedy as indicated in the thread title.

    Welcome,

I am no expert, but I'd call that a SEAMASTER, as indicated by the model name on the dial. With so little information, based on look alone, I think 1950s is more likely 1960s. It is rather obvious based on an initial impression, it appears as though it is going to heed some work!

Sorry about the brainfart in the title! What work do you think I should have done?

    Looks like a 14763 Seamaster powered by a 562.

The impression I get, is that the watch has been vigorously worn, and appears to have had little maintenance, if any. You need to have it checked by an actual watchmaker who has access to the parts that might be needed. The movement could be a caliber 565, from the late 1960s. The watch needs a crystal (genuine omega only), possibly a crown, gasket, possibly a rotor bearing gear which wears out on these. Maybe a mainspring barrel, mainspring, mainspring barrel arbor, possibly mainspring barrel arbor bearings, maybe a reverser gear, recondition, etc. Have it checked out, NOT by someone at the watch repair counter in the department store of your local mall who'll farm it out to Heaven knows who, but to an actual watchmaker. Also, stay away from the watch repair kiosk in your mall! There may be recommendations on this MB.

I'm in Sydney near Hornsby, how about you?
I was thinking of heading to the city and having it checked out at the omega store.

    Darwin, ex Sydney boy but.

Try and find a independent Omega watchmaker who will be more sympathetic to a clean service than just replace with no original parts like A Omega service centre. PM me if you want a guy in Melbourne that's OK

When did the decorated case back come along. I know early 50's Seamasters have a plain case back.

The Hippocampus first appeared in 1957 on the back of the Speedmaster and Seamaster 300. The large raised 19mm Hippocampus was only used in 1958-1959 on case 2975 and case 2846. The seahorse was shrunk to 14mm after '59 As seen on the OP's watch. I think that your watch will clean up nice.
