Finding the perfect Speedmaster (for me)

So I have always wanted a Speedy, but have usually talked myself out of the purchase because I can't get over the fact that the "original" doesn't have a date. That being said, I love the design, and *almost* everything about it. Now before I get flamed by the "no date" camp for bringing it up, I am one of the few who find a date display on my watches quite useful. So, I am posing the question...does a Speedy exist that has:

    1. A date display
    2. Legibility of the traditional moon watch (i.e., white hands + black dial)
    3. Sold on a metal bracelet
    4. A more standard lug size than 21mm

I am thinking that the ref. 3576.50 ticks most of these boxes, but I thought I should ask a more knowledgeable group before going down this road. I basically want either an original moon watch with a date, or a 44mm cal. 9300 model that I wouldn't have to squeeze a 22mm strap into.

Speedmaster Date and Speedmaster racing are imo the best choices for you.

Wow, thanks for the quick response guys. I would love to see a "modern" (non-LE) interpretation of the grail. That would pretty much be a game-ender watch for me.

Do any of you 3576.50 owners find it difficult setting a hand wound watch if you leave it sitting in the box for a few days while you wear other pieces in your collection?

There lies the rub and why most collectors really hate most Date windows. Any watch with a date window that winds down is more annoying to set then a non Date piece. Hence rotation of watches esp if you have multiple hand wound watches or don't have enough winders to support the rotation things start to get annoying.

Moonphase can only be another step in annoyance but you can look up the instructions pretty easy online.

Date is over rated. I too wanted a watch with date. Once you have multiple watches, having a date is a HUGE headache. Plus, once you get old you can't even see the date.

Agreed. A date on a hand wound watch seems kind of silly to me. I am sure I will cave in a moment of weakness and get a Speedy, but for now I will still just wait and wish...

@stewphill you have three posts so we get it.

Heck, before I got here I had an INVICTA.

Trust me, the Speedmaster pro is the way to go.

    And welcome to OF.

Hi Stewphil, I have the 3576.50, and I personally enjoy the ritual of winding and setting the watch in the morning before wearing it. Setting the date and the moonphase is rather easy with the supplied pusher.

Based on your requirements, I too would suggest the Mk40, based on the famous workhorse Valjoux 7750 and finished by Omega as per their requirements. There is also the Omega 3551.50.00, but you might want to study up on the Cal. 33x3 before hand. Cheers!

    Agree date is over rated.

Get yourself a speedmaster and put a calendar on the front door.

Not as if the date is gunna change during the day.

One could also just check the time or use the stopwatch on their cellphone.

It's about conveniently having functions on the wrist, which was the point of the wristwatch in the first place. I have to check the date quite a bit signing documents and whatnot throughout the day, and wearing a watch without a date drives me batty.
