but have already a question ... the seller charged the watch so after 1 1/2 day of travel it arrived up to date and running ...
i read that the 1040 caliber you have to turn the crown clockwise but how many turns ????

sorry but didn't found that ..

    thanks

Congrats on your purchase! It's super cool and I love it!

For other automatics I have, my watch guy said to give it a 10-15 turns of the crown in the morning and a few when you take it off at night. I pretty much always forget to wind it at night and they're all keeping time just fine.

It certainly shares the watch's aesthetic!

That's a box for a Seamaster Polaris, not quite as old as your watch. Still, IMO that box is nicer and more interesting than the plastic box that ref. 176.007 actually came in. :)

HI Andy K, which plastic box did Ref. 176.007 normally come in? Did they come in other boxes? My watch is according to the serial number from 1974.

Congrats! I have the same, very happy with it.

BTW, that strap looks a little narrow for the lug width?

The plastic box with the faux wood is the most commonly seen box for all the 1040s sold on bracelets:

There are multiple versions of this box with different wood grains too. These came in reddish brown and gold cardboard outer boxes as shown with this Speedmaster:

There's also a rectangular red box that probably went with 1040s that came on a strap.

I've seen a few other boxes that are less likely to be correct based on the year. It's hard to say but my sense is that a lot of vintage full sets are pieced together with incorrect boxes...for instance one of my 1040s came in the famous 1960s "red box" that many 105.012s, 145.012s, and Seamaster 300s came in. Problem is the box is 10 years older than the watch I acquired it with!

Where did you learn which boxes came with which watch? Amazing esoteric knowledge! You should create a visual guide ...in your spare time, of course!

Well boxes are less interesting to me than the watches themselves I suppose I've learned what I know about boxes from looking at lots and lot of sales ads over the years.
Thanks. I did make a visual guide to cal. 1040 cases, casebacks, dials, movements, and bezels, as well as lot of stuff about serial numbers. I doubt I'll ever get to boxes, but you never know...:)

OMG! Those are amazing references! Just flicking through everything you have out there ...now I want a cal 1040! What a labor of love to put that all together! Well-written too. The moderators should give you a sticky thread if you don't already have one. Wow!

Well thanks for not giving us the "Uncle" or "Grandfather" shit and coming straight out with it.

I don't know how long this post will last, but thanks for your honesty.
