I will not write about a watch as William @Spacefruit recorded very nice video on that topic.
Final result is $57 805 (premium included).
Very beautiful dial. Of course I remember choclate brown dials 2998s sold for more that 100k but for some time I haven't noticed any strong sales.
Congrats for the buyer! Maybe someone here? 😀

I would say that this watch might have achieved better results if the photos had been better - these are heavily processed and inconsistently processed at that - same lighting and the brown shows different.

I agree from the listing it had the potential for a very attractive thing, I just could not see it from the photos provided.

here is the you tube:

Interesting, here are my thoughts:
Tropical watch photographer is MUCH better at communicating the character of the watch.
The dial body colour is better than I thought.
I am leaning more to a re lume
The movement is a little dirty, compared to original shots from auction
The Rolex watch dealer who bought this thinks the speedmaster market is much bigger than it is.
Do we think any buyers of brown 2998’s did not see this first time around? Maybe. But I think most of us saw this.

would love to hear others thoughts on the lume plots.

It’s a tricky one imo. I like the colour of the lume and the granular texture. I also like the fact that the plots are not perfectly neat as modern professional relumers often do a much neater job than original. However they are perhaps a bit too messy to be original which certainly makes you wonder what’s going on.
I’m thinking that if this was a recent re lume, meant to deceive, Its unlikely they would have done the lume quite so badly (while getting the colour and texture spot on.) Could it have been a bad day at the dial makers? Maybe, but I’m leaning toward an older re lume.
Still, it’s a beautiful dial!

I vote for re-lume. There appears to be much more of it (ie it appears much thicker) than on the other photos posted in this thread.

It is a lovely watch though.

Re Lume here as well . The thick parts are too thick for Factory Lume. The best Re Lumers factor in imperfections now as well.... We come to chemical analysis now. Like IWC in the last 20 years did with steel samples from cases, because the fake cases did get to near perfection... They used the Swiss Police chemical labs for that analysis. Steel components have changed over the years. IWC Mk 9 , 10 and Mk 11. And early Ingenieurs.....

I'm probably missing something here, but didn't Tropical Watch mark this up more than $21k over the auction result?

Come on. 80k for a Speedmaster and you’re not even bothering to fix the stretch in the bracelet?!

I think this was William's point.

This dealer has an interesting history with Speedmasters. Remember this one? IIRC, it was also given an ambitious asking price ... initially.

Sometimes the lumeplots can be damaged during service, as a result the surface looks a bit messy.
In this case the plots on the bottom part of the dial look like they have been chipped. So to me it looks like either a vintage relume or original.
Edit: in any case thats a damn good looking watch.

I didn't know that Jacek was "the Rolex dealer" Spacefruit referred to. Given the size of the markup, I thought it might have gone through other dealers before Tropical got it. My own guesses are (a) no one will make a convincing case that the watch has been doctored, and (b) it will simply slip into Jacek's "Sold" listings at some point, with no clue as to what the actual sales price was.

I have bought from, sold to and sold “on commission” through Jacek.
IMO he always wants to sell, not have watches sitting for weeks. That is his business model, sell, get commission, repeat.
So to my mind he nearly always prices to sell, anything too highly priced is usually “on commission”, ie from a customer or another dealer, he advises what the sale price should be but you get a little leeway. He is usually spot on with pricing in my experience. Selling within hours. (My experience only)
