I am happy to share my latest catch and the one that took me a while to land, a Rolex Double Red Sea Dweller. It was worth the wait because I got it from the first owner who finally relented to sell the watch to me. This particular DRSD has the Mk III dial with nice creamy patina, although the hands are a shade darker which is just normal. The bonus is the bezel which has turned into a light grey color or to what is known as a "ghost" bezel. The case is unpolished and the bracelet is the heavy oyster with 93150 code and 585 end link.

I have to get my mind out of the gutter. I quickly looked at the title of this thread and thought I saw "Finally caught my Rolex in bed"

I'm very ignorant towards vintage Rolex but this thing just looks stone cold cool. I love this.

Looks great. Much better then the certain auto celebrity that got a super tired one and called it mint last week.

[emoji848] I don't want to spoil the fun, but could show pictures between the lugs? Also the insert is not original, it's a later service one.

I took shots between lugs but it did not come out so clear. I will try a get better photos using a different camera. Anyway, the back case has the last 3 digits of the serial number, the reference number 1665 and the manufacture date I/72. Serial is 3.5mil which is consistent to a MK3 dial

As for the bezel, I spoke to the previous owner again and inquired if he changed it. He said that a friend gave him the ghost bezel as a spare and he decided to use it for that more vintage appeal. He also said that the original is still with him but asked for a few days to locate it. Sub bezels are still a gray area for me as far as knowing what is original for a given model.

Would've been nice if he'd ventured that information without you having to ask about it.

I am just giving him the benefit of the doubt that he forgot about it because the gentleman is quite old already.

Yes and no. The sea dweller was made in much lower numbers then the Submariner. That being said there is always a couple for sale. They where made for 10 years.

The large price is more due to the fetishiism around watches made over long periods with few changes, and in this case the fact that the SD is a more special/technologically advanced Sub. Basically bragging rights if you own a seadweller over a more run of the mill Submariner.

I'm not knocking the SD and the DRSD is a great watch. Just the way I read the market and the prices around these things. Again the DRSD is a special and iconic tool watch that deserves its elevated status.

Lovely piece, and the bezel is great. Very lucky you are getting the original bezel as well. Mk 3's are quite rare. Is the dial chipped at all on the edges ? Many of them are , as they chip when being taken out of the case, (the dial laquer adheres to the case). These watches are appreciating in value especially with a good non chipped dial.
I have just acquired a mk3 ( with my watchmaker atm) so am curious to what yours cost you.
A special piece and a joy to own , well done.
