Bulova “Moon Watch”? gatorcpa Bulova Moon Watch $550 (base price) If you want to grab a watch inspired by one worn on the moon, the $5,000-odd entry cost for Omega’s Speedmaster can be a bit steep. Thankfully, Bulova also found its way to the moon in the early 1970s, and it recently released the chronograph following the original, real-deal moon-landing example’s sale earlier last year. Visually, it’s a close copy of the original with only minor variations. The biggest change is the addition of a high-beat quartz movement, a feature Bulova is known for. Some enthusiasts might decry the lack of a mechanical heart, but consider this: The reissue is accurate to just a few seconds every year, making the new watch far more accurate than any of the ones—Omegas included—that landed on Earth’s satellite. http://www.automobilemag.com/news/g...B4279211AB10719B31E6DC7785DA42E71A54E4EE1D360
Reading the original article.....to be honest....I would spend a little more on a mechanical movement and go for the Tissot 1948 Heritage A good size, impeccable movement and a very attractive dial
For reference, here's the real thing: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/dave-scotts-watch-worn-on-moon-for-sale https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/moon-watch-sells-for-$1million And this story suggests the original Bulova was based on a UG Space Compax: http://wornandwound.com/bulova-used-universal-geneve-get-moon-can-get-one-today/
It’s based on a legit Moonwatch so no anger for me. I would have preferred a more correct movement on it.
Not the worst looking chrono in the world, though I'd agree that the "262 Khz" text might have been better situated (say under BULOVA). If you're looking for a space connection, why not hunt down an Alexsej Leonov style Poljot/Sekonda chronograph If only they'd had Omega's marketing nous........
No idea why those would be considered "fighting words"...and I've seriously considered getting one as a grab and go quartz...
NASA didn't select the Speedy because it was the most accurate watch they could find; it wasn't. They selected it because it was the best survivor of torture testing.
Present company excepted. You know how some of the Speedy fanboys can get. Just poking the bear a little bit. gatorcpa
I've seen it in person, it's really nice watch. Pretty sure I'll eventually get one, I've been looking at the used complete sets on the forums and the bay.
My was directed at their ad copy. The watch itself reminds me of a Mk, although the quartz is a let down.
Under $100 and always set my grab and go Bulova chrono Not a moon watch but pretty easy to read . . .
I like them and I also have peatnick's example in black, both robustly built, highly accurate and very legible.
Man, I gotta say. The original looking one with patina and no sub-dial text actually looks fantastic. Like I "might" actually buy it kind of fantastic.
The original one was a one-off unfortunately, so unless you're willing to search for the buyer of the Scott watch, you're stuck with the quartz one :/ With any luck, maybe Bulova will update it but I think it's supposed to be a limited run as is.
You'd think by now they would have understood it's a good idea to reproduce the color of the patina and not include a date window....
