Fifties Omega 30mm - sword hands?

Which is exactly what I was trying to do.

Jeez! Tough crowd here.
You forgot the emoji ::rimshot:: (I will add 馃槈)

Try thinking of the members as a group who has known each other for decades and who hang out daily. They respect each other and like to rib each other. Occasionally a new person walks in and wants to join in the conversation. Rather than treat the new guy with kid gloves, they treat him just like everyone else, which is a mark of openness and acceptance.

Also, you got some valuable replies and advice, right? These curmudgeons took the time out of their day to respond, which if you think about it they've done thousands of times. It might soften the impact if you imagine you have walked into someone's workplace in the middle of the day and they are in an important meeting. You ask your question and they stop what they are doing to reply. You get your information and are happy.

I hope you don't take offense and that you continue to stay active. Your interest in vintage watches is worth sharing here and it'll be fun to see what you find. Last bit of unsolicited advice, if you really get annoyed, which people do, don't overlook the personal messaging function. Give the person a private chat and you will likely earn a friend.

Cheers.

I would like to ask a simple question (with my humble english),

right or wrong: "A pre-1966 Omega watch can not be equipped with sword hands."

Not 100% sure but I vote for wrong. I think the Seamaster 300 had sword hands before that date.

Thats why I asked: 馃榾 AFAIK Omega changed (1965/1966?) to sword, because of complaints (to hard to see) of divers....
Here my BT with "stick": 1968

It can be a bit like this on here I am afraid. There isn't much tolerance

It can be a bit like that on here unfortunately. It's a helpful site but there is a harshness here that isn't found on somewhere like Instagram for example. The tone used by some people ( not specifically talking about this thread ) would get them a bop on the beak from me if they said it in real life

A harshness not found on Instagram ? Maybe. Maybe not. At least this forum is not full of horrible fakes like Instagram .....

It can be like what?

The OP posted a question about sword hands and received two rather polite comments indicating that more study was need on the OPs part.

Then the OP cracks a sad because he didn't like the response.

Some of us get a bit worn down by endless inane questions and rather than spend ten minutes explaining everything, only to never get a reply or see some of the posters ever again.

The watch the OP posted about is a horror story and should have been obvious to someone with 145 posts (indicating recent activity on the forum).

This forum is populated by many people who are willing to spend their time and impart their vast (collective) knowledge and seek no thanks, unlike the fleeting momentary flashes of fluff I've seen on Instagram.

Maybe I'm just a grumpy old man who doesn't understand milliners.

Ahh, I had a feeling I might rattle a few feathers with my comment. Let me clarify.

For the most part are people are helpful and can really help a new member to navigate the treacherous waters of Omega collecting. But they should be really, this is a site where a hobby Is collectively enjoyed. Nobody is forced to come on here, participate or comment, something people should remember if they are starting to type an answer to something they have answered before. If it's too much bother to answer a question then don't. You can sometimes envisage the eyeballs rolling when somebody asks a question deemed to be daft by some members.

Sometimes the fact that mechanical watches are dated artifacts that nobody really needs anymore seems lost and people can seem to get het up with horological matters.

It's often the same names that pop up too. People who seldom have a good word to say about anything. The tone and language used wouldn't be used in a face to face basis but it's easy to hide behind an avatar.

Some members seem out of touch. "What do you think of this Omega?"

" If you can't get it for under 拢100 I wouldn't bother, it's a dog"

I don't recall seeing an Omega in any condition go for under 拢100 in the last few years.

No, I'm afraid it's too much of an old boys network on here. Liklihood is average age 50+. Distrust of the young. See comments above.

And with that I have talked myself out of being a member. I shall now content myself with feasting my eyes on " fleeting momentary flashes of fluff" posted by lying dishonest millennial who are trying to dupe me.

Adios.

My feathers are hardly ruffled young Dan.

Thirty years in the military and another twenty working in a shipyard immunised me against feather ruffling words (unless they were in reference to my Mum or my sister).

Pity to see you go, a bit more time here and you could have gained some real world experience.

Adios.

Hope it's not too late, but aren't you overreacting here? If you rattle a few feathers, expect some to gently touch your skin.

When I joined not too long ago, I was also surprised by the tone of some members. And I agree with you that the anonymity probably lowers the bar, and the kind of language wouldn't be used in the face to face encounter, and that's a phenomena in all social media. It's an explanation, not an excuse. I also think people should try to see a person behind an avatar.

Having said that, as you say it's a pretty open forum and you can choose to participate and with whom. The vast majority here is nice and helpful and I choose to ignore the bullies (I actually have a mental black list). I could have been offended and left, but decided to stay and learn. I don't regret it a minute and made a bunch of new friends already. And I'm way below 50 馃榿.

I thought you were gone 馃榿.

Yes, thirty years. Five years in the Navy, 27 years in the Air Force, a few more years as a reserve officer leading Air Force Cadets.
Joined at 17, went to Vietnam at 18, served all over SE Asia and Australia, had many unforgettable trips to other parts of the world.
Sometimes I was having so much fun I used to think "and I get paid to do this?".
Sometime not.

Thank you.

I always figured - if you don't know something, it's best to ask. My old teacher used to say "The daftest question is the one you don't ask."

I own a couple of Speedmasters but I'm new to Omegas really. I'm very much a Rolex guy.

I'm after a 50s/60s black dial DeVille, Seamaster 30 or Constellation (or no name) so I've been looking at lots of them over the last week.

The sword hands threw me and didn't look 'right' - so I thought I'd ask.

Yes we all learn everyday.

Except, your replies say differently. Deny it all you like - Dan got to you.

30 years and they couldn't knock that smarmy, unhelpful attitude out of you, eh? - Or maybe they helped instill it?

I'm outta here too. It's a shame, It's a good resource - but there's enough shit going on in real life right now, I don't need it online.

I'm sure someone will be along to tell me I'm over-reacting or I'm being sensitive... or worse... maybe I am...

The difference is, I have a level of self-awareness that some here (like you Jim) don't have.

Referring to your military career, like that buys you some sort of 'credibility'? Really?

I'm guessing you'll never realise how sad that reads.

Anyway, my 'self-awareness' tells me I won't fit in here, so I'll bid you a good day.

Stay safe all. Enjoy your watches.
