My HS graduation present was a Lucien Piccard Circa 101 automatic. The movement appears to be an FHF 908 but I can't find out whether it is bi-directional or unidirectional for auto winding. Does anyone know the answer? I would appreciate any additional information on the movement too. Servicing cost was 4 times what the watch is "worth" but it's priceless to me.
I’m not acquainted with that movement, but I strongly suspect the rotor winds both ways. The image on the Ranfft archive would seem to indicate so. Did you check with the shop that serviced it?
DAMN That's friggin amazing! When did that incredible thing arrive on the scene and whatever do you call it? It's like an endless web of information!
The shop had already boxed it up and had it on the way before I thought to ask. I always know the right question when it's too late to ask. Yes. I'm familiar with internet searches. Did that before I came here for help.
You were correct sir. I finally received a response from the watchmaker and it does wind in both directions. Thanks for the help.
I couldn't find it and I cross referenced a bunch of things. I cannot even figure out if it got a new name after Eta purchased the company. I checked against the orbita database for all the brands I could find that used it... I also looked at the original base 90-5 and checked against all variants 905/908/909
sometimes, this is not proper forum to ask questions anything on watches. always opt first to goog the box. i posted a fontainemelon fhf 1929 jump hour not long ago, and even if i bought this watch for years already, i still lacked information about it. fortunately, without even asking, knowledgeable OP shared his knowledge about my jumphour. then i realised that it's a precious piece being an art deco and considered as 1st digital watch.
Sorry if I was a bit blunt, I was trying to trigger your detective instincts. A Google search brings up lots of images of FHF 908s, the first two in my search were for Dr Ranfft's database which tells us the 908 is derived from the 905, as well as lots of other details. These links can be investigated and by looking at the various pics you can see that the movement has a reverser system, which is a good indication of bi-directional winding. Half of the fun is in the hunt..........not just being handed the trophy.
fontainemelon is still very much alive up to this day, after being acquired by ETA. the logo looks familiar. interesting fact.
