These 2 photos were taken in 1964 and show my dad wearing his speedmaster in a wetsuit. This photo was taken by a local newspaper in Germany of my father whilst enrolled in the RAF meeting the Duke of Edinburgh. He says he bought the watch new in 63. Appreciate the pics are grainy but that's all I have, any opinions on which model this may be ?

You should show the pictures here.

If it wasn't exactly 12 o'clock when the picture was taken, I think this was probably a ref. 2998. It might have been a 105.002-62 as well.

    What's the driver here?

Do you still have the watch or is it long gone and you're looking to source a similar one?

Well, some of the highly respected long time members here recently told me that I should read and think before or refrain from posting.

So I learned to read. I'm working on thinking still.

In this case, I read and thought and found the answer was already given:

That doesn't mean anything. His dad may still have the watch but he elderly and unable to take and send a digital picture.

The OP may have it in a drawer at home but currently be away so unable to take a picture.

It could have been sold years ago or lost yesterday.

There are several possibilities here which would help direct what advice to give the OP.

    Speedmaster + wet suit?

...This would make the heads of several members here and most of those on WUS explode :D

EDIT: and the too slim NATO would take care of most of the others!

That’s the first thing I saw and freaked me out. Seems he needed a Seamaster.

What role in the RAF requires a wet suit I wonder?

The watch certainly looks like a straight lug Speedmaster but the pushers look rather fat. Difficult to say from that pic though.

Being in Germany he had a long walk to the beach anyway. Looks like it was a 'mock up' showing equipment to the Duke for different operations on his visit and the watch was not part of the official kit. They probably had a sand pit round the corner for desert.....

This might give a clue what Father was up to but I cant make it out. Maybe RAF SAR related?

To try and answer your questions. I have been clearing my dad's things as he has gone into a home and found this photo in a drawer.
The watch was sold in the 70ies as it had stopped working, not surprising really as he did dive with it and it did leak!
He was a member of a sub aqua club within the RAF camp so no official military dive connection. They dived mainly in lakes but occasionally went north to the sea.
The "driver" of this post is merely to find any info that can be gleaned. I would love to replace the watch for him but financial and physical limitations means he cannot wind a manual or generate enough energy to power an auto. Instead I got him a Bulova moonwatch which he's delighted with.

Looks like you came up with a good fix. Depending on budget and based on all your information another option could have been a Quartz Seamaster. Prince William is happy with that choice and he got his wings in the RAF. I doubt your Dad uses a chronograph function now and he probably should have picked a Seamaster in the first place given his hobby. Also I have family in care and they recently put their watch through the homes laundry wash….so Seamaster all the way being good for 1000ft.

I doubt the watch survived if it was used together with a wetsuit :(
