Find of the decade (well for me) My Dad past away in 2004 and I had a very feint memory of him wearing a watch. When me and my then girlfriend now wife moved to our first flat in 2006 when I was 21 I put the watch in a draw, in a box, in a series of garages over the years where it sat forgotten about until last week and I’m now 39. I’ve been collecting for 10 years and my dads Seiko 5 from 1996/97 I’m not to sure exact date, has been sitting waiting all that time. It’s in mint condition with exception of a few tiny scratches which of course I love because he did them. It runs and sets perfectly and the last week has kept perfect time. I’m so pleased. Thought I’d share. Barn finds are of course no longer but every now and then.
They’re great watches and it’s nice to know the heritage of yours. If you google Seiko Date Finder and enter the model and case number, you’ll be able to find the exact date.
That’s fantastic thanks @Spruce He either got it slightly earlier in 1991 and I hadn’t noticed as I was very young or in 2001. Either makes sense. Thanks again. You are such a valuable member of this community and I always enjoy your posts. All the best. I
I suspect that we have more in common than you might have imagined. Here’s my blue dial … and thanks for the kind remarks
Although my memory in this isn’t perfect, I’m pretty sure your father’s Seiko is the exact same model of the first automatic/mechanical I had. I guess I got it in the late eighties when I’d have been in my mid teens. If I could be certain it was the reference I had then I’d hunt one down as I used to love that thing.
I presume you're using the serial no to figure this out (you don't need to go to a date finder site if you know when the watch might have been produced - 1st character is the year in the decade and 2nd is the month in the year, so if it's 10xxxx then that's October xx?1 - the only trick is knowing when it might have been made. The 7S26 movement wasn't released until 1996 so if your watch is 1xxxx then it's a pretty safe bet that's 2001.
That is absolutely fantastic and that makes perfect sense in regards to the date. Thanks so much. I’ve decided to have it serviced as it’s been in a garage for 18 years, I noticed a slight fogged up ring of moisture on the underside of the crystal yesterday when the weather was damp, I want to give this to my Daughter one day so think it best. Again thanks for the info.
